Can't transcode HEVC on Intel 7th Gen

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314 (running on TrueNAS SCALE)
Player Version#: Web 4.143.0

Hey all,
I’m using Plex on a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF using an i7 7th gen. When I try play transcoded content, the media in my library that uses H.264 utilises hardware transcoding using QSV on the Intel UHD 630 graphics on the chip which is what I want. However, when I try play H.265/HEVC content, the hardware transcoding fails and it falls back to software transcoding which is incredibly slow.

When I do try it, I get this error:

TPU: hardware transcoding: enabled, but no hardware decode accelerator found

however this only ever occurs with HEVC content, H.264 is transcoded perfectly fine with the iGPU. Is this a known thing or am I just unlucky? I’ve tried playing several different HEVC files across the Plex Web app and the iOS app both of which encounter the same results. Sorry if this post is a bit vague, I will try reply to it with logs when I can.

The CPU is an i7-7700 (no letters or anything after, UHD 630 graphics) - according to Wikipedia it should support 10-bit HEVC

All the files that fail to transcode are 10-bit colour

HEVC profile?

I’m not sure what you mean by this but Plex Dash reports the video profile as “Main 10”

AFAIK, Kaby Lake only support HEVC 10bit with 4:2:0 subsampling.
Verify that your files don’t use anything above that.

How can I go about doing this? I just use VLC to look at the files but can I do this within plex or one of its apps?

The color profile bt2020 indicates that this is a HDR color video. Currently, if such a file is transcoded, it also requires HDR tone mapping to be applied, or the colors will be off. I have a hunch that it is the tone mapping that fails.

Turns out that is the case! With it disabled, hardware transcoding works flawlessly (see screenshot below). How do you think I could go about fixing tone mapping? The devices I intend to use mostly support HDR but it would still be nice to support.

With the coming unlocking of H.265 encoding during transcodes, tonemapping will happen less often.

With that being said, of course tone mapping should be functional in general.
Unfortunately, I am not an expert for your server platform. I assume it has something to do with hardware support for tone mapping and how it’s achieved on your server platform.
Maybe @ChuckPa could shed some light on this.
Meanwhile, please enable debug logging on your server, recreate the failure, then fetch the server logs, so there is actually something to diagnose.

Definitely need the logs to see what it’s not liking.

Important elements here:

‘/dev/dri/renderD128’ – does the transcoding
‘/dev/dri/card0’ – does the tone mapping

Need to confirm everything is coming through correctly.

Also, The listing I find for this model: HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Small Form Factor PC shows it to be an i5-6500.

I did the following (in order):

Booted the container from TrueNAS SCALE
Watched the movie without tone mapping enabled, with hardware transcoding working
Enabled tone mapping
Played the movie for a little bit with software transcoding
Played the movie using direct play

Logs are in debug mode as this was enabled ages ago.

shows it to be an i5-6500

HP made this PC with several models of CPU across 6th and 7th gen, refer to this page with its warranty details, where it is stated to use an i7-7700.

You’ve got a few things to clean up first.

Transcoding looking ok but the playback part (outbound streaming) is fighting against the FQDN references where they don’t belong.

Allowed Networks does not permit FQDN entries

I realised this after reading the subtext on app.plex.tv but I never realised I didn’t clear it, whoops.

I removed all of the FQDN stuff since I realised my intended setup wouldn’t work anyway so I’ll just use app.plex.tv to access the server

You’re allowing that URL to have full admin access to the host

Can you clarify what you mean by this? I thought allowed networks was just who can access the server without signing into plex.tv first.

Is there anything else you suggest I do or should I just do the steps I did for generating logs previously and send the new logs here?

Access to the server without signing in grants ADMIN privilege (your privileges).
Anyone/anything accessing that way can make any changes to the server they want as if they were you.

This is dangerous because someone could come in and delete all your media.
