HEVC Encoding Forum Preview

Can confirm it has appeared to resolve the issue I was having with the HVEC options not appearing and HW transcoding not working.

@dklein those issue are all client side and are being addressed there

Thank you Chris and team for your work on this feature, and your engagement during the preview process.

@chris_decker08 thank you for all of your work on this.
I’ve noticed the dvr recordings are missing subtitles when HEVC is enabled and hw accelerated encoding on the tuner in plex. It seems to happen only when using HEVC to make tv recordings.

@chris_decker08 could you add this to the bitrate change note:

Can you add a say ‘max/ultra’ high 4k quality, perhaps limiting to 80 or 100 Mbps.

This is because sometimes (like me) the network plex is on is capable of multiple Gbps, and so ‘maximum transcode quality’ ends up trying to do it at ridiculous transfer rate, which neither my server nor my client can actually handle.

Would this range simply be a direct play range? Just curious what the use case would be for HEVC transcodes in the 80-100 Mbps range when most UHD Blu-ray are already in that range?

That’s mostly likely a client side thing. It’s been brought up a few times in the thread. Chris can’t control what the clients visually show. They did just announce a beta for the clients and I suspect that’s what some of Chris’s ambiguous comments were about so I suspect that will likely be something addressed in the client redesign currently happening.

As it is now there are no 4K options at all, we need some 4K options starting at maybe 12Mbps, which should be doable in HEVC. maybe then 20, 30, 40, 50 as well.

We have a 1080p 20Mbps option, but based on discussions in this thread before it’s not clear if this forces down to 1080p or stays at 4k.

Also, yes I know it’s not in scope for the preview, I’m just adding input in hopes that a seed is planted for future updates.

This is definitely a client side thing. I have Convert to 4K options on iOS:

hopefully with this we can finally get 4k optimize version setting

@chris_decker08

If I try burn-in PGS subtitle, HW transcode doesn’t work (s3014).

On the other hand, if I burn-in VOBSUB subtitle, HW transcode work.

1.41.2.9239

i5-13500
Intel UHD Graphics 770

Plex Media Server Logs_2024-11-25_16-42-09.zip (49.8 KB)

Steps to reproduce
If I use 1.40.5.8921 it works fine. If higher version it will have this problem.

@chris_decker08 could I bug you to give a little more insight on the current resolution calculations?

I saw here that it should be calculating things using 2/3 the standard BW settings. Which, if I understand correctly, means 1080p would be chosen at 8Mbps * 2/3 = 5.33Mbps+. But when set to 4Mbps (and transcoding from 4k) I sometimes see 1080p, sometimes 720p, so it seems like there must be more at play here.

Just trying to find what the new minimum BW is to trigger 1080p using HEVC, assuming it’s purely bandwidth based. (I understand there are client limitations, like iOS only has no options between 4Mbps and 8Mbps currently)

Thanks!

@neunghaha28 this seems unrelated to this preview, please open another thread if there isn’t one already.

@chris_decker08 How is it not relevant when I tested the preview version (1.41.2.9239) and I had the same issue and attached the log?

@GlowingBits if I had to guess, you are seeing that because we take into account the bitrate of audio and subs to fit into the target bitrate. we adjust the estimated video bitrate by 2/3 but the other two bitrates may be large enough to force a resolution change… again that is just a guess.

@neunghaha28 because per your post you are also seeing this in public builds after 1.40.5, not just in the preview builds. The issue is not contained to just hevc transcodes which is what we looking for feedback on here. I appreciate the feedback you gave, and very much appreciate the logs, i jut don’t want it to be lost in all the other hevc stuff.

is anyone with an older-ish intel device on windows having issues with pgs burn in of 10 bit data?

@chris_decker08 I have opened another thread and if the preview version has any update about this please let me know. Thanks a lot.

No problem here with an i5-7500

I had to disable HEVC last night because a family member was getting a blank screen with audio only on a XBOX One.

So this morning I went to watch Live TV with HEVC still disabled and at first it struggled to start playback but then figured it out. After a couple of minutes this happened.

No hardware was being used. All software transcoding.
