Once the macOS Server update metadata fix is released, I have a few devices I’ll be able to test against.
A bunch of phones support HEVC but not HDR… and mobile devices are arguably the most in need of the reduced bandwidth HEVC will (ultimately) deliver…
no need to convince me lol, i’m just trying to find a way to reproduce locally
@chris_decker08 sorry yes a tv tuner
That’s interesting, I didn’t see that documented anywhere, so I made my own script. I’ll need to check that out.
I just installed the HEVC Preview on Windows and immediatly after installing it and restarting PMS (as a service) I got a notification that an Update was available.
Installed: PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9012-0fb7f45fc-x86_64
Plex (beta) Update offered: Version 1.41.0.8992
8992 is what I was running previously…
If I recall correctly, when I installed other Preview PMS builds (HW Encoding Preview?) It was considered a separate branch and I was not offered ‘regular’ or ‘beta’ updates during the Preview and the only updates were updating from new releases in the Preview Forum posts.
Could this change also be made to the next Preview build?
Ahh I knew this but didn’t remember how I knew. Thank you!!
Indeed I looked at the source and it’s there, a nice undocumented feature. Either way works, I also shared a way to download with the pms-docker as well.
I have a Windows 11 PC with Intel ARC A380 graphics and a SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME Cable HDTV.
I record a few game shows every night and because they are small and I delete them after watching them I don’t have PMS do any transcoding as part of the record process.
However, I thought I would try today with the new x265 HW support and was at first happy that PMS indeed converted my video from 720p H264 (I have Comcast) and instead of the native file size of approx 1.55GB per ~30 minute show, the x265 file was/is 5.21GB in size! haha
PMS Native TS and X265 TS.txt (14.9 KB)
Obviously these ae from two different evenings of recordings, but should be comparable for this purpose.
Plex Media Server Logs_2024-09-17_20-02-24.zip (5.0 MB)
On a side note, my computer I use for PMS BSOD for the first time ever (since upgrading) while I was composing this post.
The logs were generated about 5-10 minutes after my PMS computer restarted… coincidence!?
I dont see the new option after installing it on my wd nas.
@hbuch which gpu does your nas have?
Hi Chris. My unraid server has both RTX 4060TI and ARC 770. 4060 is for VMs and 770 for plex.
@jfreiman the zip file you attached with your logs appears to be corrupted.
For some reason I dont understand, the transcoding of live TV has been fixed in this release.
This has been a problem from over 2 years ago, which I thought would be fixed after 2 years of not using live tv. Can you keep this fixed? As in, dont mess it up in the general release?
(16-09-2024)
It appears that model doesn’t have a GPU so no HW transcoding with that one.
The WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra has an ARMv7 CPU, which does not support hardware accelerated transcoding. See Plex NAS Compatibility List.
Hardware accelerated transcoding is a requirement for HEVC encoding (see first post in thread, paragraph above Known Issues).
In addition, it seems this settings in Web.xml is what makes the live tv work in combination with the current transcoder?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>(see ‘hevc’ in: <VideoProfile protocol=“http” container=“mkv” codec=“h264,hevc” )
Cannot remember if this setting is standard, or I might have changed it. In combination with this xml I can live stream TV inside my chrome browser without problems on version;
https://artifacts.plex.tv/plex-media-server-experimental/1.41.1.9012-0fb7f45fc/debian/plexmediaserver_1.41.1.9012-0fb7f45fc_amd64.deb
It seems that it might direct play then / direct stream?

Having the same issue - any luck?
Plex is not recognizing support with the experimental version in LSIO Docker container. No checkboxes in settings to set.
Using GTX 1060 which is GP106 which has h265 support, so not sure what the issue is.
Works fine for transcoding otherwise - here is doing a live TV session currently:
