Hide ratings in Plex HTPC? (IMDB, TMDB etc)

I was wondering if it’s possible to hide ratings somehow within Plex HTPC? I’m on MacOS and was curious if it’s possible through something like text editing or by customizing some files?

If it’s not possible I’d hope something like this could be included in the settings menu in a future update @gbooker02 @sLumpy ? Ratings can be distracting when browsing your own personal media, or even a form of spoilers when you see the rating of a particular episode. Would appreciate any tips!

Why do you keep editing my post and removing my mentions of you @gbooker02 (Plex HTPC dev) and @sLumpy (also a Plex HTPC dev)? If neither of you have an answer to the question, just say that!

Also it’s rude to edit my post but not offer an answer to my question.

Probably because there’s already multiple feature suggestions about this

If you tag someone in a post they probably get an unnecessary notification every time someone posts anything

I didn’t see any request for this particular question regarding the HTPC app. And if it was asked before he could’ve just pointed me to that discussion, but no worries! No harm no foul.

I thought I seen one of the devs say you can edit the Plex registries for customization of some things, that’s why I asked (and also why I tagged them specifically) as I couldn’t remember which dev said that.

Also somewhat curious about where the devs are. gbooker02 has not been active here in a while - last post was on Sep 15. Hope everything is fine and he is just on vacation…

Not specifically Plex HTPC but there is this.

Oh dear. I hope he is not one of those poor souls who have gotten laid off… That would be a catastrophe for all - for all Plex HTPC users (as he seems to be the only one really caring about the app), and also for Plex Media Server… The latest updates to Plex HTPC were kind of small… Damn, if they just would open-source the framework of Plex HTPC - like it was with Plex Media Player (exciting time back then…) or let selected users collaborate on making it better… But I already asked this years ago and the answer was no…
Let’s hope for the best… At least his profile still says “Plex employee”.

Sorry for being off-topic

Ahh man yeah I hope that’s not the case. I didn’t even think about that. Hopefully he’s just enjoying a good vacation and will be back soon.

Plex HTPC and PlexAmp are the 2 apps that really made me rethink moving to emby or Jellyfin. It’s nothing out there that competes with either of those on any competing platform IMO.

Well he just removed his name once again from being mentioned in both of my post in this thread without offering a reply (which is not like how he would usually respond) so either he really doesn’t wanna be mentioned in a question, or something else is happening behind the scenes.

Hope all the HTPC devs are doing well!

No, that is not what I said. I was referring to workflow and the impact of staff cuts on that workflow, as we have seen with PMS (which was directly mentioned by a Plex employee).

Edit - as for an option to hide ratings. Whilst some may not want it, it really is a very very minor annoyance. I’d rather focus be kept on actual function.

Minor if it doesn’t bother you sure, but if you are someone who really doesn’t like spoilers, it’s actually very very annoying. I wish PMS would just allow you to disable it server wide.

Functionally what would you say needs to be improved in HTPC before adding more customization? For me it’s the most stable Plex client by far (running on Mac mini M2). Just wish it was more customizable like the old Plex Home Theatre app or OpenPHT.

That’s the only ratings source available for TV shows, and for movies IMDB is at least more consistent with ratings (and less trolls).

And cool lol take care.

You pinged people who cannot answer your question. In these cases I tend to edit the posts and remove the pings. People tend to figure out from this that they are being a nuisance but I guess some are just too special.

To be clear: I cannot answer your question. I don’t work on the relevant codebase and I’m not party to the decisions made regarding it.

Most of the devs don’t read the forums (can’t imagine why). I supposed I do because of my beginnings in OSS but users like you are making me believe that I should abandon that thought.

The only people I pinged were the developers of the app who are active here, how am I supposed to know either of you can’t answer the question? I also said if you are the wrong person to ask, please point me in the right direction. But you didn’t even have the common courtesy to do that.

Only thing I’ve figured out so far is that you are a rather rude person. Instead of editing my post multiple times you could’ve just replied “not sure how to do that or I don’t know if that’s possible”. That would’ve ended any questions directed at you regarding this particular inquiry.

Well that’s all you had to say!

Wow. Users like me? What exactly have I done besides ask a question? And yeah I would agree that you should abandon the thought of visiting the forums if this is how you respond to users asking simple questions about the app. It’s incredibly rude and makes Plex as a company seem like jerks (which is the dominant thought among Reddit and other A/V forums). You only help reinforce the stereotype that Plex employees don’t care about the users.

And isn’t name calling against forum rules? Insinuating someone is a nuisance, and calling them “special” (which is also rude especially if I did have a disability) is definitely not cool.

I’m going to close this if it continues to head down a road that only leads to toxicity and it will be unceremonious. I’m also going to attempt to clear a few things up for future reference. and directly answer a few of the questions if I can though some of it has already been said in one way or another…

  1. I am assuming what is being asked here to see it there is some undocumented work around for this specific app HTPC. There is nothing built in currently like a toggle in interface or by editing a config file for HTPC (or any app) that allows for to removing interface elements like that.

  2. The second half is a feature suggestion . [Here] is the request about it (Please add 'None' to 'Ratings Source' choices) which as far as I can tell the OP already voted for. There are no current plans that I am aware of to have a toggle for this as shown in the example but that may change at any time, with considerations on how the code in individual apps works and what happens when an element goes away what replaces it if not an empty space. ( more space for summary maybe, do other things move up or to the side etc)

  3. In general if you are going to make a feature request especially about something that is shared among many apps like the interface do not limit the request to just the app you happen to use.

  4. Devs are like construction workers, They get plans from others and implement them. All folks at Plex like any one on forum does gives their input when they have opinions since we are all daily users of the apps as well. While devs also give input to product managers, team leads & designers what is actually possible since X may work on Apple but not Android for example, they are generally not deciding the final plans.

Toxicity is not coming from me here. Maybe have a chat with him and see why he decided to be rude rather than just giving a simple answer if this wasn’t possible.

Ok thanks for letting me know. I read (here or maybe Reddit) that editing the Plex database, you could use an app like dbBrowser to edit the Plex.db file to remove reviews/ratings. However I didn’t want to try such a thing if any of the devs warn against it in case I corrupt my install or something.

Noted, however this was specifically a question regarding HTPC as unlike streaming devices, computers have infinitely more capability in customizing and digging into registries etc to change things.

To be clear I wasn’t demanding an immediate answer, however I did find it rude he edited the devs names out of my post (also pinging me as if he had replied when he didn’t) instead of just saying he didn’t know. That would’ve been the end of any further discussion.

Calling me a nuisance and “special” for asking a question? I find that the only toxic thing about this whole thread. Especially when I was nothing but respectful in my question.
