Hiding a second server from clients possible?

Hi,

First of all sorry if this was not posted in the correct category.

I have a NAS plex server and 2 plex NUC players.

I now purchased a laptop with 1TB which I want to use as a seperate server and player at the same time for travelling purposes without the need to stream from my NAS when no internet is available.

For this I created a new server on the laptop within my existing Plex account.

However, I would like this second server not to be visible on the two plex NUC players. On the other hand, the fact that the NAS server playlists are showing on my laptop clients is fine, actually it’s even nice to have.

I know I can just create a second Plex account but I would like to have the option to manage both servers in one account without the need to login and log out all the time. Plus I only have one e-mail address and don’t want to set up an second e-mail account just for this.

So far I tried:

  • not ‘claiming’ or login in to the laptop server.
  • adding the IP address/subnetmask of my laptop to the list of addresses and networks authorized without authentication under the network section in the settings.

Unfortunately this does not work. The Laptop playlist remain visible in the clients.

Anyone has an idea if and how I can do this?

Thanks!

Why bother with creating a second server at all? Just copy the files over and launch them direct. Seems like way less hassle than managing two distinct servers and libraries.

You could also attempt to create a Managed User, which is what a lot of people do for kids who don’t want or need accounts. You can control what it sees in the library.

What do you mean with “copy the files over and launch them direct”. Do you mean just play them on VLC player or another mediaplayer from the laptop? Because I really prefer the graphical elements (cases, fan art etc) of the OpenPHT environment over a simple player like VLC.

If you mean something else could you explain please? If you’re talking about an option where I can keep OpenPHT and lose the second server but play the files from a local folder I am very interested in that  I would love that option but I thought that was not possible…

That’s actually what I meant. If the experience is what you’re after, then it helps your scenario make more sense.

A consideration/alternative so you won’t have to run a second server… Kodi actually makes for a phenomenal standalone browser/player. No server necessary.

Trying to figure out some good solutions that don’t involve double maintenance. I’ve considered running a second server as well for backup purposes, but maintaining two is quite the deterrent. I’m pretty meticulous about maintaining my libraries.

shame I thought you were gonna say Openpht standalone is really a thing

I used Kodi for years but switched to Plex and OpenPHT and never looked back. Guess I probably will have to.

I just would have preferred to stay within one environment for everything but you’re right that it does not make much sense to keep up two servers just for this.

At least I am used to the Aeon Nox skin for Plex so I can set this up on Kodi too.

If you end up sticking with Plex as the solution, try the Managed User option… which I believe is server specific? I’d have to wait for someone else who runs under this configuration to weigh in.

I know you can limit the libraries with a Managed User, just not sure how it would behave across two servers. You get a profile selection screen where you can select which user you want to use. On devices you don’t want to see the login (everything else but the laptop, I would assume) you can select “Automatically log me in” which removes the profile selection screen.

Actually just took a quick look at my own users, and it looks like you can assign libraries by server… Maybe a Managed User would work for you…

Thanks. I am gonna try out both solutions.

But in the end I will probably go for the one server solution plus KODI for on the go.

You’ve convinced me that KODI for local files just makes much more sense. Thanks for reminding me it exists

What OS is your laptop? I have the Plex app on Win10 and am able to sync content locally and have it act as a mobile server.
