Hierarchy Arrangement Question - Can Plex sort Movies/TV by Genre?

I currently have my files organized by genre, so for instance:

  • Action Adventure

  • Comedy

  • Documentaries

  • Sports

and so on. I’d like to be able to review my media in Plex based on genre. So I’m thinking of the following:

Movies

Comedy

What We Do in the Shadows

and then the same for TV:

TV Shows

Sports

F1 Racing

Will Plex be able to recognize this and give me what I want? I’d hate to have to completely revamp my files in case Plex makes a major misstep and I have to leave them. Thanks all.

There is no sort by genre or genre view at the moment.

If you mean can you put them in folders that way, then no. You would need to add each genre folder to the library setup so the scanner can see the show/movie folder first. Meaning if you have. D:Movies/Comedy/What we do in shadows. then D:Movies/Comedy/ is what gets added to library settings

You could ofcourse make a library for each genre but then you could not sort/filter movies related in other ways.

Thanks. I don’t think I follow what you meant in the above. Can you elaborate?
Regarding the limitations in filtering in other ways, what others ways would I be able to filter, but could not if I tried sorting by my Movie>genre>title priority?

I just mean for example if you have your movie files sorted into individual genre folders they need to be added to the library like below. and due to that you could not view by folder and see those genre folders.

There simply is not a genre sort. There is a genre filter but that excludes everything but that genre.

Got it. Thank you for explaining.

You need to distinguish between “sort” and “filter”.

Plex doesn’t support sorting by genre (it doesn’t make much sense anyway, if the library is larger than a few dozen items).

However, every Plex client allows you to apply a filter by genre.
Some client types even allow more complex filters.
