High Bitrate Videos

Hi found that Rasplex stutter badly with high birate videos. Especially with contents >15Mbps. Would play for 1-2 sec, then pause to cache. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm using 0.1.35

I do not have a problem with high bitrate content with rasplex. You on wire or wireless?

I am seeing this as well. I am on wireless. This was not the case in previous versions. Just started seeing it in 1.35.

I’m using wired of course. I noticed it can handle movies up ~12Mbps but more than that it will stutter.

What resolution are the videos and what kind of audio?

I'd add to this two questions.

- Do you have the same kind of behaviour with xbmc ?

- Is the stuttering you are mentionning like overall stuttering or is it something which is coming periodically every X seconds ( more or less) ?

I was unable to test this with xbmc as I could not get wifi to work with openelec.

This is overall studder the video is very juddery.

These are 1080p videos with AC3 video

I have posted before that if I pause the video the cache is running and if I keep the video paused the cache will run up to a certain point (between 50 and 70 mb) and then stop.  The fps then jump from 8 or 9 to 28-30 fps and I can play the movie fine for a little while before the jitters start again and I look and see the cache climbing and my fps low again.  This did not happen prior to 1.34.

I thought this might be my wifi connection but the apple tv 3 sitting right next to the pi has no problems.  These are all h264 m4v files.

Also when I play this on my windows client that is on the same PCM as my plex server the frame rate stays at he correct 24 fps. On the pi after the caching it goes to 28 or 29fps. I have tried adjusting the cache, switched the google to adjust output to meet video file frame rate to on. Nothing seems to work. The files this occurring on are Avatar and Jurassic Park. Both are pretty large h264 M4v files.

There are wifi Issues after 0.1.34 which are due to openelec 3.0 merge.

We have fixed some of the issues in 0.1.37.

If you feel like trying it and report, this helps us tracking openned issues as we cannot test every setup :)

Thanks I will. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t something I had done.

The stuttering playback still occurs in 1.37.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

I have tried .35, .36 and .37 on a wired network, with DTS and AC3 passthru enabled and have pausing where the video cache has run down from about 65MB to 16KB. Only seems to be happening with 1080P H.264 movies.

Does anybody know if there is a version of rasplex (or server) I can revert to to prevent this in the mean time?

Thanks.

EDIT: I have done some checking to rule out the network. The Pi is connected at 100Mbps (cat /sys/class/net/eth0/speed) but is only caching a about 10-20Mbps (gigabit desktop caches at full 1Gbps)

I’m on 1.37 and wireless and mine Will play bluray rips with no stuttering. Did you overclock?

@dansvarre, do you got a wired or wireless connection? How much did you overclock? Only the CPU?

IoOverclocked to 850Mhz (i think) and can't run high bitrate Movies via wireless (got a 150Mbit/s stick).

I’m on wireless and i overclocked to 950 mhz and sdram and core to 450 and overvoltage 2.

The wireless stick Can be the problem, with one cheap 150mbps dongle my pi is useless, but with my netgear 300mbps dongle it works great.

I just need to pause for 20-30 seconds for it to buffer enogh. The 100mbps network interface is the showstopper not the cpu.

I have tried with and without an overclock and I get the problem with both. Is it possible to increase the cache size?

@dansvarre, is it save to overclock that high without cooling?

You Can increase cache to 30% in the UI.

Yes mine have no problems, i’m using dynamic overclock so it is only going past 700mhz when it needs to. I’ve been using it for several months with no problems.

The Reason the PI is Caching at 10-20Mbps is b/c the Ethernet port is on a usb 2.0 bus ever data input on the pi is based off of usb 2.0 (SD card, the Ethernet, and the 2 usb ports share one usb2.0 lane) its very possible its not able to cache fast enough to keep a steady stream.

Perhaps, but it’s an intermittent problem, some high bit rate films play just fine. If I could increase the cache would cope with a drop out in the stream.
