High cpu

I am trying to play MKV videos but I see very high cpu with Plex New Transcoder on TS-453A QNAP NAS.

The transcoder will run depending on many factors like which client is being used for playback as well as quality settings, subtitle formats and the way the file has been encoded.

To see what the CPU requirements are you can take a look at this support article: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201774043-What-kind-of-CPU-do-I-need-for-my-Server-

I have TS-453A-16G
CPU : Intel® Celeron® N3150 1.6GHz quad-core processor (burst up to 2.08GHz)
16GB RAM

Its MKV files and subtitles turned on…

MKV is a container, meaning like a zip file, that inside it contains individual tracks, like a video track, an audio track etc…

Transcoding will kick in, if trying to play a media on a player, where on or more of the trackĹ› are not supported.

So we need to know what player you are using, as well as the media info for the MKV

I have been noticing this as well where I have never had any issues before. TV shows and movies I have watched on the same server and device now push the CPU up around 95%. It didn’t do this until I upgraded to the latest version a few days ago. I am running a QNAP TVS-871 16gb ram.

It seems to be having issues with transcoding. I wouldn’t have even noticed it but I walked past my NAS and heard the fans screaming. I thought it was just hot in my house but when I checked the usage my CPU was at 95% with 1 user logged in watching a video.

Yes Ive got a HS-251 and over the last 3 weeks ive basically come to a point where the ÂŁ300 QNAP can nolonger run plex. Im in the process of selling it. Its usless junk to me.

Theres something changed somewhere to a point where plex just maxes the CPU out on all tasks. Even a fresh install and library update takes 10 hours when it used to take less than an hour.

Something is defo wrong. cancelled plex pass sub.

I am thinking this could be related to the build number on QNAP firmware. I am running 20160311. Anyone else?

I’m running latest. I don’t think it is however I’m still to test alternative builds.

I just installed 9.12.19 PLEX and its running 5000% better. I’m still waiting for updating of media but basically with current version updating my library from fresh takes hours and had cpu at 100% throughout. this is now running quick and CPU is normal. Will let you know however it seems plex might be the issue here. Will post results.

Working fine. Its probably a bit of an older version that I’d like to use but the plex has gone from playing 1 second of media every 10-15 seconds inbetween pauses@100% CPU to playing the same video @7% CPU load.

Library update on the current version to just short of 5 hours but took about 30 minutes on the 9.12.19. At some point there is something that’s clearly changed making plex very resource hungry either intentionally or not. Theres going to be allot of very hot QNAP NAS’s out there, At least for the ones not realising until it overheats and blows up maybe :stuck_out_tongue:

We got any Staff that can take a look at this? Might be related to a firmware @ Qnap side as well but certainly old PLEX versions seem to be fine.

Just to chime in as well, I am having the same issues on my 453 mini. Files that were previously no issue are now sending my CPU load up to as high as 98% and then back to 60%. I tried going back a generation on the PMS install but it didn’t do much, I will now try 9.12.19 and see if that works here as well. definitely confused as to what could be causing such a dramatic change

I am having these same problems on my TS-453pro. High CPU load when playing a video. I notice people have mentioned going back to 9.12.19. Where would I find this version to download. I can only find the latest one. :((

When you say the “latest one” what do you mean? I am seeing no issues with 1.0.0 since updating, I believe I am actually seeing lower stable CPU usage than even on the older build. I looked around when I saw this and I am not seeing them anywhere on the site anymore (they used to have a page dedicated solely to previous builds). If you are not on 1.0.0 I would give that a shot. The only thing I have done otherwise was expand my volume as it was getting full.

Just installed the latest version (1.0.3) and seeing the same CPU issues. Anybody know where to get a download link for 9.12.19??

Hi guys, yup still today if you have an .MKV file and you turn on a subtitle the QNAP TS-251a will go to 99 - 100% workload. weeew

Okay…Wrap-up here…

So far, lots and lots of people has added here, yet not one single person added what we need to digest this!
