Hijacked apps

PlexConnect users know that this app is not installed in AppleTV’s. It simply picks one app from Apple’s menu and, instead of using that app for it’s initial purpose, it uses it to interface with Plex.

It has been a concern all these years that apple apps would evolve in such a way that could prevent this “hijack” capability. This concern materialized recently, the following apps can no longer be used by PlexConnect

AOL On
Vimeo
NFL
Tastemade
WWE Network
Smithsonian
iMovie Theater
MLS
Weather
UFC

The solution for affected users is:

  1. HIjack another working app
  2. Generate new certs
  3. Update Settings.cfg and load new certs in aTV

Issue #603 has been opened in github to handle this.

I don’t expect a big impact on PlexConnect users since most are hijacking Trailers and up to now this app was not hit. But I don’t know what can happen in the near future.
