Hold out for HDR/Atmos/DTS:X on XBox One S or just buy an Nvidia Shield?

Just adding my experience here. I bought the Shield so I could enjoy 4k movies from Plex with Atmos support. The Shield does that marvelously! My Plex server is doing 100% direct play for all content to the Shield. However, the Shield cannot play Netflix with Atmos support. We have a HDHomerun Prime with a cable card and the Shield cannot play content via the HDHomerun app because Comcast in our area adds DRM encryption to all of their channels.

So it becomes a game of swapping devices to watch the content I want to see, the way I want to see it. Here is how I use the different devices:

Xbox One
Cable Channels via the HDHomerun app
Netflix for 4k and Atmos shows/movies
Gaming - Excellent quality games

Nvidia Shield
Plex for 4k and Atmos movies
Gaming - Not nearly the quality of the Xbox for the games I’ve played

All in all, I’ll be very pleased when the developers can get the Xbox One Plex app up to snuff for true pass through. I’ll then move the Shield to my bedroom TV and retire the Roku device there.

:frowning: False Alarm

I’d like to add to the requests for Atmos support for Xbox One S - it would really make Plex a more complete product.

hi devs, i would also like HDR, Atmos, TrueHD support on my Xbox. Plex is really great app but this is misiing. Please!!!

I definitely agree. I bought the Xbox One X and use it more for media than games.
Big disappointment that Plex can’t pass through HDR or Atmos, so I would love to see this support added, please.

Also waiting for HDR and Atmos on Xbox one X.

Does Xbox One need to support it too? Or is this purely a Plex problem?

I have Plex on both an Xbox one X and a PC (Plex Media Player). I have now stopped hoping Plex to implement HDR on these 2 players, I have installed Kodi + MPC-BE + MadVr on my PC and HDR is working great…

When you give up hope, what else do you have?

Is the roku 4k an option? It’s way cheaper. I know roku does 4k HDR, i have a TCL tv with it in it. Because the tv doesn’t have the latest ARC spec, it can’t do atmos/dts-ma though

good question, im thinking about trying that roku 4k as well. I may just buy it to test and return if its not working well. If i do, I will keep you posted elitemike.

never mind I will not be getting it because it does not support 1gig ethernet. it is only 10/100 which is the same as my tv which stutters due to the bandwidth restriction. i wish Plex support would chime in on the status of their xbox app

I did not know that. I just assumed it would be 10/100/1000

yea i was about to buy it today then read the specs. Pathetic. Now the option is to spend $200 for either an apple tv 4k or nvidia shield…which is absurd.

Apparently the shield can do a lot more than just be your player. It may be powerful enough to transcode 4k from my understanding.

I bought it and it’s great. Still would rather just have a working Xbox app. The shield has all the codecs so it doesn’t need to transcode anything I believe. I just got it so don’t quote me on it. I watched a 4K HDR film with no stutter woot woot

Yet another disappointing Xbox update.

I seen the update but why can’t I find any news anywhere on the internet what the update consists of?
What exactly was the update that just came out?
I get excited every time I see a Plex update as I really want to watch my content again.

Hi Muzinator, it is in the release announcements section - http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/130706/plex-for-xbox-one#latest

Nice another xbox update that does not mention or alleviate any issues!
