How does Xbox One X perform as a Plex Server? Need 4k HDR and dolby atmos support

Hey there, was considering buying an Xbox One X so I could play both 4K games and use it as a Plex Server, but I’ve been reading there are lots of problems with Xbox One X. It’s been a while since anyone has commented on it and I’m wondering if there have been updates since.

Does anyone know if the Xbox One X can play 4K HDR files in true Dolby Atmos via Plex and if it can be watched smoothly?

Thanks heaps for the advice

I may be out of the loop here, but I’m not aware of any way to have an Xbox One X act as a Plex server. A client, sure, but I don’t think there’s any way to run it as a server.

Oh you may be right! Happy to use it as a client. Should have asked “Do 4K Dolby Atmos videos play smoothly on the Xbox One X?”

4K HDR plays back like it should. But Atmos is a bust. Tried to get answers as to why this works with other third party apps on Xbox (Netflix, Disney+) etc, but just a wall of silence…

If you want Atmos. Look elsewhere.

Maybe they’ll solve it by the time the next Xbox is released in Holiday 2020…

xbox can’t be used as server
hd audio doesn’t work on xbox with plex

the shield is not perfect, but it’s the only mainstream device with hd audio/truehd/atmos support, which can also be used a server (for smaller libraries).

because all those other apps use DOLBY DIGITAL+ATMOS

they do not use TRUEHD+ATMOS.

the only way to get truehd+atmos is to play a bluray disk directly in the xbox.

no xbox apps will pass truehd/atmos, because MS/dolby don’t want them to.

Sounds like NVIDIA Shield is the way to go. What do you mean when you say its only useful for “smaller libraries”? I have the bulk of my media on external HDDs. About 500 movies and 50 TV shows. Will a large library make it laggy?

Thanks everyone for the advice, it’s greatly appreciated!

the shield is not a full on PC.

it is an ARM based system, similar to a mobile phone or tablet, with a great gpu and support for all the necessary stuff for 4k/hdr etc.

as a client, it is difficult to beat.

as a server, with limited local storage, low power arm cpu, and limited ram, at some point the size of a library may start exceeding the limitations of the hardware and thus start slowing down and/or be less responsive, or other issues that may occur due to insufficient resources.

where that limit is, is probably going to be different for everyone, based upon both their individual library, and their personal tolerance on performance.

Thanks heaps, you’ve been a massive help. Gonna get that NVIDIA Shield Pro!

Damn, I jumped on that Plex Pass too quick. No music queuing on xbox was what made come here to the forum looking and I haven’t even got to ripping DVDs and Blue-Rays yet. No ATMOS? And I’m beginning to see Plex “Inc.” are non-responsive to anything but their pet projects. Gonna take a closer look at emby I suppose.
