I’m looking for some help getting my home movies into Plex please. Although I’m not an expert by a long way I do have a basic knowledge but I’m really struggling here.
I am converting the files from .pds files into MP4 which seems, for the most part, to work.
The first problem is it doesn’t always! I have eight home movies in my Plex media folder of which it acknowledges seven (i.e. show in my browser and can be played) but one is missing. It is in the same format and named in the same way.
Also, when I try and edit the Title, Sort Title and Poster this works temporarily but then it loses the formatting. I am trying to start the name of each file with “Hol” followed by a meaningful name so that they are grouped together and easy to find. I have created a folder called Holiday in my Plex movies folder but, whether they are in there or in the main folder, it loses part of the name and sometimes the “Hol” bit as well.
I’ve tried taking them out, refreshing everything and then copying back but exactly the same hit and miss recognition occurs.
Any pointers \ ideas etc would be much appreciated.
I also have issues with home videos. I’ve been using Plex for quite a few years. It started out fairly simple and I was impressed enough that I gave $5/mo for a long time. I stopped contributing awhile back as I’m no longer satisfied. Unlike many on here, I do not rip movies. I just want a way to easily view home videos on TVs throughout the house. I know how to use Plex and I’m not using the Movie library. I have a Home Video library with “other videos” set to use the Personal Media Agent. All of my home videos are neatly stored in folders. All I want Plex to do is present what’s in the folders. It used to be able to do so, but over the past couple years it has become unreliable in this task. I can place new home videos on my file share, and when I go to view them in Plex, half of them will have the wrong name and thumbnail, from another random home video in a different folder. Sometimes hitting “refresh metadata” will fix it, sometimes not, and I have to manually redirect it or name it. Other times I’ll browse to a folder and it will have merged several home videos. I don’t know why this has to be this complicated. I’m not asking Plex to organize anything or name anything, I’ve already done that. Watching the evolution of Plex over the years, my impression is that the focus is on commercial movies and TV shows rather than home content.
Thanks for replying Steven and your post makes for interesting reading. It is reassuring in some way that it isn’t just me who is having problems.
I am determined to figure this out though so will keep trying different things. As and when I come up with a solution I will post on here should one be available!
