I just started using Plex… well, sort of. I’m in the beginning stages of deciding whether or not I want to use it. I’ve come across a problem that is driving me crazy. I put a couple of home videos of my family on my server but when I scanned library files two frustrating things have happened. First of all, they are only showing up as one file. There’s a little “2” in the upper left hand corner but I can’t figure out how to expand to show the second file. And second, it’s showing up as a Hollywood movie. In the first case, it showed up as “Damage” (2009 Vin Diesel flick). I renamed them, and rescanned. The second time it came up as “Spy Kids.” WHAT IN THE WORLD?? Basically, I just want to be able to play 4k videos from my Mac and phone on my TV. If there’s a better option than Plex I’m all ears. But if not, I need to get these glitches figured out. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!
Have you created the library for “home videos” (other movies)? – for those, there should be no agent attempting to match them against hollywood movies. Instead Plex should show the videos with their file names. If you have those home videos in mp4/m4v format, Plex should also use their embedded metadata.
Files should only show up as under the same name if they do have the same file name (or the same main name with varying suffixes such as “X-Mas (2010) - home” and “X-Mas (2010) - church”). Plex assumes those are different versions of the same movie (as in different qualities, e.g. 1 for HD and 1 for 4K).
Plex’ key benefit is the matching if you have regular (“hollywood”) movies.
If all you want to do is playing back your private home videos, you might be better off just putting the files on a file share in your network and e.g. using VLC or a similar “general network player” on your TV or set top box.
