Hotspot Shield VPN & Remote Access

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2368-97add474d
Player Version#: all

Hi, I am trying to enable remote access with my server. I’m currently running hotspot shield VPN and it says that remote access is enabled for about 5 minutes before saying it is not accessible via the public internet. I have set up port forwarding on my router and manually forwarding port 32400 on Plex server settings.

Can I enable remote access with Hotspot shield enabled? I have a suspicion that there is something going on with Plex but I am unsure how to test.

Many thanks in advance!

I found the solution:

Custom Server Access : set your public IP and port (not VPN IP) as http in the custom server access url. Test with canyouseeme.org

Hello good sir, can you water down what it is that i need to do when you say i need to “”“set your public IP and port (not VPN IP) as http in the custom server access url. Test with canyouseeme.org”""
I am a complete noob when it comes to these things… I had my “server” running off a NAS. Decided to build a proper server since i grew to adore plex so much, but for the life of me i cannot figure out how i can get remote access to give me a green check mark.
Server is on a windows 10, VPN i would like to use is HotspotShield.
Thank you so much in advance!

I believe this support page gives you the information seeked.

With your router, you have a public IP and a private IP. Your public IP is the external facing IP address which your ISP provides. Go to whatismyIP.com to find it. Once you find it, you need to set the server address as the public ip: 32400. You may need to include a port forwarding rules to forward TCP 32400. Each router is going have it’s own port forward settings.

It is enabled, however as soon as i connect to a VPN, it says it is not accessible from outside of my network.

It will say on the remote access tab that the server is not available outside of the network. If you can access canyouseeme.org on the server, it is accessible

I cannot see it on canyouseemen.org tho, i think you have the same setup i am running. Windows 10 Plex server with hotspot shield running in the background? I do not know what to do at this point…Any help would be much appreciated kind sir.

If you have set your custom server as public ip:32400 and If you are putting in your public ip and port 32400 into canyouseeme and its not appearing, you need to create port forwarding rules on your router to forward TCP 32400. Each router has varied instructions on how to initiate port forwarding rules.

VPN off = canyouseeme.org sees my service on port 32400
VPN on= canyouseeme.org does not see my service on port 32400
Everything works while the VPN is off, i want the VPN to always be on tho.

I am actually running Plex for Mac but this trick works for Windows as well. Last thing to check is to go to your server settings. Below your server name there are two general settings. Settings(grey header)->network. Within that page, There is a field called, “custom server access URLs.” make sure your custom server address is [public ip]:32400

It made no difference. Are you running your server on windows with hotspot shield running in the background?

Ya i did that, but doesnt that change when i connect to a VPN? my public IP changes everytime i connect to hotspot shield. Sorry i am a noob when it comes to networking. In the network section i put my public ip while the VPN is off. On canyouseeme.org still isnt able to see me whith the VPN on. IDK what else to do, might just forget the idea of having it on…Any way i thank you for your time. 64TB of data with no VPN isnt safe…

Your public IP does not change unless your ISP resets it. You must be using your private IP instead of your public IP in the custom server address.
