How Can I Sign-In To The Plex App Without The Use Of Another Device?

Of course you don’t know I’m just joking… no, of course not.

Ok, here’s another area I can’t wrap my head around, but you, are EXACTLY the demographic Plex has aimed their whole company at, so they’re gonna fix this little thing AT WARP SPEED, SCOTTY!

Well, at least you have that going for ya…

(ease up - blood pressure meds aren’t particularly expensive, but you have to take them every day)

Yeah LMAO at you. There are other ways to make signing into an app secure - besides requiring the hassle of a second device. Many people use the Shield TV box primarily as a “streaming” device - and for whatever rerason they might not own another internet device. The fact that this never occurred to the “geniuses” at Google is just typical of how their thought process lacks intutition… IMO if many of the apps on an android TV box require a second device to sign-in, there should be a bold print on the outside of the box that states: “Full Use Of This Device Will Require A Second Internet Device”. That would seem a fair thing to do. Have that printed in BOLD letters on the outside of the box.

I’m just amazed that anyone would spend $200 on a shield, before buying any other internet communications device.

Not to mention, the laughability of believing you are actually using only a shield web browser and bluetooth keyboard to complain, and continue to reply.

Without the internet, how did you even know about nvidia shield, logitech k400 wireless keyboards, and plex ?

That’s being a bit harsh, whats the largest form of marketing? Word of mouth. Yes today it has manifested into online forms.
If the guy does not want a mobile phone, that’s fine. Or was his knowledge from a previous part of his life? Who knows and it’s non of our business. He came to the forums for answers, he was lucky and chatted with a Plex employee.
So instead of ridiculing welcome a new forum member.

How would one know about online forums, without previous access to the internet.

Word of mouth sure.

No one buys an nvidia shield, bluetooth keyboard, then comes straight to the plex forums complain because of PIN login, based on word of mouth.

You’re a real "know it all “smarty pants” aren’t you? Before the Shield TV box my only internet device was an Acer Chromebox. It broke down so I decided to go with a Shield TV as a replacement. And no I didn’t spend $200 - I have the 2017 Shield TV model and at Best Buy it cost $179. For me the price was worth it because I like surfing the internet on my big-screen TV - and Chrome works just about flawlessly on my Shield TV. I also like the fact that I get TV apps. The YouTube app is pretty nice IMO. I had paid $220 for my Chromebox - so my Shield TV was actually $41 less. Plus I like the hardware on the Shield TV - the fact that it comes with 3 GB of RAM is helpful when using the Chrome browser. The hardware on the Shield TV is the best that I’ve seen on any “official” android TV box.

Yes, agreed.

Okie dokie.

In any case, as already stated, there is currently no solution for you, until if/when plex changes the login procedure.

Your options are to

  1. wait until such time.

  2. find a friend/relative with a modern phone/tablet with internet access.

(perhaps you can invite them over to then watch some free ad-supported on demand videos from plex, or watch some youtube (which also requires PIN login if you want to log into a youtube account, if I remember correctly).

  1. procure another internet device of your own.

Shield and plex are great, but neither are perfect, and neither am I.

Welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the forums, indeed. The OP came here with a specific problem and question and has been met primarily with incredulity and skepticism. As of yesterday the question has been answered (as of now, another device is needed) and the problem acknowledged (an internal feature request has been created). What else needed to be said? Save one comment, the traffic in this thread since has served no purpose but to, at best, make the OP feel inadequate and abnormal for having only one Internet-connected device or, at worst, insinuate that they’re lying. None of that excuses their name calling though, but might make it at least understandable.

My first take was “just use the machine the server is on” but then I figured out that the OP doesn’t NEED a server if all you want to do is watch ad supported content. In that case, he has uncovered a pretty significant BUG in the sign in process. Tip of the hat to you, Sir. Well done.

Not only that, but what would be the workflow of ONLY using a shield to setup BOTH client and server.

Really how do you know he does not have a friend advising, Lighten up Tekno and stop posting outside the forum guidelines

Huh?

I don’t believe I posted outside any guidelines, and I was one of the first to attempt to help, and provide the only real answer way up on post 18.

Everything before then was attempts to figure out what the heck he was trying to do based on what little information was provided, and explanations of how/why it works by TWO plex team members.

Instead of “Hi folks, I just bought a shield and it is my only internet device. I am unable to login to plex, because every time I switch to the shield browser, the plex app changes the pin.”

The whole thread stank (and frankly still does) of a thinly veiled attempt to complain ‘this forced pin login with no alternative is stupid’, instead of coming right out and saying that.

Of which I agree, the pin requirement with no way to manually log in, is just plain dumb.

I was not the first to note the unlikeliness of the scenario, where someone in todays world, would buy a relatively expensive device, and a bluetooth keyboard, and claim that it is their only device.

No phone? No other internet device? And coming to a forum for support FOR, and ON, an internet streaming device? Come on, true or not, it stretches the boundaries of believability.

I would be just as skeptical if someone came on and said the same thing they couldn’t log into their fire stick because they don’t have any other internet device.

Never mind they somehow bought one (either online or instore) and registered it (because you can’t download plex without having an amazon account), or the extremely unlikely scenario of someone going through the trouble of jailbreaking a fire stick (is that even possible anymore?!?) and side loading plex, all without having a secondary internet device.

Sorry, I just call it how I see it.

I try to help anyone/everyone as much as the next guy.

Am I skeptical of things that do not make sense or not explained or are just flame bait?

for absolute sure.

Do I provide snark and sarcasm where needed or applicable? I sure do.

I’m sorry if that offended anyone’s delicate internet sensibilities.

I took the initial posts in stride, until it started to look like this either an extremely rare scenario of the modern world, or a vague cry for help in lieu of a straight up complaint/rant.

Ok, read the Guidelines as you have definitely breached “Welcome” for just one.

@ChuckPa That link doesn’t go anywhere.

Thanks @basilh

Must be something I can see but others can’t. My apologies.

Chuck I can see the Forum guidelines without issue, it maybe a browser cache issue.

Cheers
