How Can I Sign-In To The Plex App Without The Use Of Another Device?

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I have the Shield TV (android TV device) with the PLEX app. I went to plex.tv/signup and signed up for PLEX using my Google account (with the Chrome browser on my Shield TV). However when I go back to the PLEX app and try to sign-in it tells me to enter a 4 letter code from a browser on another device. The problem is that I don’t have another device. Is there a way for me to get signed into the PLEX app without using another device?

Use the web browser on a mobile phone or tablet.

I don’t have a mobile phone or tablet. This sucks. Any other way?

use the same device you used to create this thread?

No computer of any type? If you have a good friend or a family member with a computer, you can give them your plex login credentials.
(Tell them to use the ‘privacy’/‘incognito’ mode of their web browser).
They need to log into plex.tv with your account data and then give you a telephone call. After you have called up the page with the code again, tell it to the person on the other side of the phone. They type it in on this page https://www.plex.tv/link/

The time span between you calling up the code on your side,
and the person on the other side typing it in must be very short (under a minute) or it won’t succeed.

That’ll probably not work, because if you make a thread switch on e.g. Android, the plex app will be suspended and the link will fail.

NO I don’t know how I can be more clear: I have no computer or other device! No friends/family with another device. For a company that is supposed to be “intuitive” it’s a shortcoming on the part of PLEX to presume that everyone in the world has another internet device to sign-in. Why can’t I just enter a username & password like on 99% of my other apps. For a tech savy company like PLEX - this isn’t thought out very well at all.

I was able to sign-in to the PLEX web site with the Chrome browser on my Shield TV (using my Google account). Since I signed-in to the PLEX web site isn’t there some way that sign-in from the PLEX web site can just transfer over to the app? If not there should be.

Have you actually tried to go to plex.tv/link and put in the code?

Yes I tried that. I entered the code on the PLEX web site - however when I go back to the app it just gives me a new code and says I need to use the browser from another device. Is there any way you can report my problem to a PLEX engineer and see if they can help me?

I’m afraid that is how it was designed to work.

Back ground: Until a few weeks ago, Plex was only useful in conjunction with a Plex Server.

Since typing in email addresses and passwords on a tv device, using a traditional remote control, is tedious and error-prone, it was designed as it is.

Now with the introduction of the Video-On-Demand offering, I agree that this will probably have to change.

I will file a feature request internally.

Thanks. I’m only wanting to sign-in to the PLEX app to watch the new streaming service from the app. I’m able to watch the new streaming service from the PLEX web site after I signed-in there. So at least I can do that for now. From the APP I don’t see any option for the new streaming service - so I’m assuming that’s because I’m not signed-in to the app?

I actually use a Logitech K400 wireless keyboard with my Shield TV box - so typing in passwords is simple. However I was able to sign in to the PLEX web site with the choice of clicking a button for my Google account or my Facebook account. I never even had to create/enter a pasword. Maybe as a feature request you could mention the ability to sign-in to the app with one’s Google account the same way they do from the PLEX web site?

The “on another device” string is there because typically devices don’t have an bundled web browser. You can use the browser on your Shield.

  • Sign into plex.tv on your shield.
  • Start the app on the shield, take note of the pin code.
  • Visit https://plex.tv/link on your shield then enter the code.
  • Switch back to the android app.

I haven’t tested this personally but believe it should work. I want to believe Chrome has means to receive key input without an attached keyboard.

Hi thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately that advice doesn’t work. I’m signed-in to the plex web site. Next I go to the PLEX app to get my code. I then go to plex.tv/link and enter my code. However next when I go back to the PLEX app and try to sign in - instead of signing me in it just gives me a new code and says I have to use a browser from a different device.

Have you considered making the new streaming service available from the PLEX app without the need to sign-in to the app? That could be one possible solution. I’m able to watch the new PLEX streaming service from the PLEX web site - but not from the app.

:grimacing: eek. Refreshing the code each time complicates working around on device with a bundled web browser. I’ll follow-up on that with the Android folks.

He used a Chrome browser on his shield I believe

Yes I used the Chrome browser on my Shield TV.

at this point, you are just going to have to borrow someone else’s device or buy your own.

there is no other solution until if/when plex changes the manner of login.

I guess I’m like Plex in that I can’t believe someone running a Plex server has no way to get on the internet - other than the game console - the server is running on.

How’d they hear about Plex? Snail Mail Spam?
No Amazon Shopping until now?
They had to walk into a store to buy a Shield?
No, I’m sorry, I just can’t wrap my head around that notion.

I’m not running a Plex server “Mr. Genius”. I’ve never used Plex before and I just want to use the PLEX app for their new streaming service. And you’re wrong again - I didn’ty buy my Shield TV as a gaming device. I’ve never used it for gaming.

Not going to borrow someone else’s device - that’s a pain in the as*. I’ll wait for PLEX / Google to get this “absurd” situation corrected. It sounds as though Google has something to do with creating this “archaic” sign-in process on android? I’m sorry but the belief that requiring a second device to sign-in is somehow “better” or “easier” is a backwards convoluted way of thinking. Figures Google would cook something like this up…
