How can I tell if Plex is streaming native FLAC files to my iOS device?

Now that iOS 11 added support for FLAC how can I tell if Plex is no longer transcoding FLAC files?

Also, if Plex now supports FLAC on iOS I assume I’ll need to delete all my old syncd content and re-sync to get the FLAC files on my iOS device, correct?

When you play an item you can go to the web interface and under status see an item playing.
If you highlight over it you can see if its transcoding or not.

This is one that is transcoding due to video…

This is one that is direct playing since it needs no transcoding:

You can also check in the log if you want, you can check this post to get an exact reason on why the transcoding is taking place in the log.

And yes if you have some “Optimized Versions” already in sync with your client that didnt support FLAC you will need to delete and resync to get the real deal.

As a test, I downloaded about 400 FLAC songs to the phone. All ‘DirectPlay’. No conversions. about 5-6 minutes on an iPhone SE

Yes, if you have have ‘optimized’ or previously sync’d music, you will have to sync it again but it’s quick with no conversion involved.

Hope I’m not hijacking the thread, but does anyone know how I can sync my ALAC music to my iPhone without conversion? Every time I sync ALAC music files, PMS tells me it’s converting, yet I have settings on Highest (original).
Thank you

Ok, so when I’m playing a FLAC album on my iPhone 7 Plex says it is being transcoded to AAC. Any idea why that is happening for me and not others? I have Music Quality set at “Original”. Is there anything else that needs to be changed?

Also, ‘Now Playing’ isn’t always showing what is actually playing. Sometimes it is blank when I’m playing audio (and that audio is not already synced to the device).

bump bump.

Ok, looks like Plex doesn’t support FLAC on iOS yet, but it’s coming soon (streaming via the app) but not for downloads as that requires a server update for some reason??
