really wish it wasnt so horrible to be honest. Plex app on shield connects fine (direct) but the Xbox app only connects remote and is horrible

If you’re only able to connect remotely to the server then there’s likely some network issue preventing a connection via the direct address. Please have a look at the DNS rebinding section in https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/.
