How do I see my collections?

I cannot view collections on my Roku 3. I followed the instructions at the top but when I start the Plex app, I only have my Movie folder view on the left, I don’t have an option for library. In the end, I found that if you make the first director name in the list the name Bond for example and do that for all Bond movies, then when you go into one of the bond movies, there is a button on screen with 3 dots, select this and now you will see one of the options is “More by Bond” and you now see all the bond movies. Is it because I have not paid for the subscription that I don’t have the option for collection?

… I found it easier to just create a playlist for each “Collection”. Playlists seem to be standard on all the apps/devices. …

The only problem I see with that idea is that playlists seem to be specific PER user. Collections seem to span users… (since it’s a tag)…

I agree - I love the organizational use of “Collections” but accessing is laborious, to say nothing of the fact that it doesn’t seem o be accessible via Roku (my other method of accessing my Plex collection). This could definitely benefit from a revisit!

Collections is a good function, but really hard to access… :frowning:

I struggled with finding a Collection in Roku Plex, but now I’ve figured it out. Hopefully these steps help others who may still be stuck.

Go to your chosen library, and on the left I see a short list of view options including “Browse All”, “Unwatched”, and “By Folder”. Choose either “Browse All” or “Unwatched”. In the next screen, use up arrow to select “All” near the top right of the screen, press enter, scroll down to “Collection”, press enter, scroll to your collection, and press enter one more time.

What would make Collections REALLY useful for me is if it would work like a tag:

At the bottom of DETAIL view of a Movie the Collection (after the description) Tags are shown (inclusive addition of existing and new tags and removal of false set tags) and a list of corresponding movies to this one.

Collections is about making your own movie connections and remember them later easily, ins’t it? Right now this is much too complicated and limited rocket science that my mother (my testing candidate  ) could not handle.

Sad to see the issue with collections being hard to create and navigate is still a thing, this thread is pretty old and still being replied to. Well, I’d like to add to the frustration.

I think Emby handles it well, collections are shown before the all movies. In Plex, I always sort my movies by “Recently Added”; I can’t choose a filter in this view to browse collections. But I don’t want to filter it completely, I want my Collections to show amongst all my other movies, preferably first in the list.

Call me crazy, but to me it would make sense to add Collections on the left menu, right above or below Playlists in Media Library.

This should absolutley be done. Also automation of collections. Something like “Hey, we found these movies in your library, and we could offer you to create X collections with them”. That would be great

edit: I just realized that we are in the mac forum  maybe this should be made an official suggestion.

I wish it worked more how Kodi works, it goes off Metadata from websites and uses their collection data. It puts them into collections for you.

It also helps dial down on items in your library if you have it enabled. Say you add all of the Friday the 13th movies, instead of it listing them 1-10 in your library. It will instead have one item(a folder) named Friday The 13th Collection, when you click on it, it will then open a folder with all of those items in it.

It’s literally the only feature I request over all else, it’s a small one but so handy.

I’m trying to figure out whether to stay with Emby, due to a missing (and fundamental) feature that’s really affecting me now.

But I’m faced with going to Plex that is in effect missing Collections, which Emby handles quite well – it’s just another library to choose from, and Collections replace individual titles in the default Movie listing. Very nice and simplifies library browsing.

Sigh.

they don’t want a filter they want open up an item like it is a folder. however if they open up any item in a collection the other items in the collection are there. regardless they want what they want, nothing wrong with that.

I can’t figure out how to create collections in Plex. Or if that screenshot is the Collections. Those “collections” all seem to be single movies. In Emby, I can create collections of movies that comprise a series, such as Harry Potter or The Hunger Games.

@shoutingman The collection feature has been overhauled recently. Not yet available to regular user but will be soon. Read more here - https://www.plex.tv/blog/beginning-look-lot-like-collections/

Thanks! I was seeing indications that there was something new with Collections, but the documentation links were seemingly broken or behind a paywall. And I’m not a paid user currently. I’m an Emby user, but curious what’s going on with Plex; They seem to have different strengths and weaknesses.

After looking into this official and recently updated material: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201273953-collections/ , couldn’t find the proper options in my own libraries.

I only have Library and Folder options. Anybody manage to get collections visible in that drop-down menu?

I’m hoping to be able to eliminate the need for different libraries (as seen on the left) by using collection tags.

Either you have not updated your server or you are not using the hosted web app.

Curious why don’t you just use genre tags instead of all those libraries? You can filter on genre. ( obviously do what ever works for you)

Updated to Version 1.11.3.4803 (latest at this time) just before posting here. Plex Pass download.

  • I use separate libraries to give more visibility to specific sections (LGBT and Docs), and LGBT isn’t a genre
  • Short Movies are more of a niche thing I like to keep seperate
  • Animated are mostly disney/kids stuff and I prefer simply not seeing them in the main collection

The plan:

  • use collections for big/popular franchises (ex: Alien, Rocky, Harry Potter, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, etc)
  • tag LGBT movies so a simple collection grouping all of them can easily be navigated to, no messing around with filters (smart tv keyboars = no fun for filters)
  • same approach to create a ''kids movies" section and adult animation (ghost in the shell, deadspace, etc)

Really can’t figure this one out, been looking across many forums… I basically can’t get to the the “collection preplay” screen even though I can filter by collection (which is not what I’m looking for).

SOLVED

… reread your message. I was using the web browser interface but locally only. Can now finally manage collections from the web app (app.plex.tv).

Thanks!

Hope this gets implemented in the desktop server app soon!
