How do I use a regular m3u or xspf music playlist, now that playlists are supported?

Hi,

maybe I am missing something, but after the "big" announcement regarding playlists I expected...well...playlist support.

Music playlist that is.  I am not interested in creating a chain of trailers.

After installing the new server version I can:

- import playlists from iTunes (since I am not a Apple use this is useless to me)

- add albums or songs to a playlist (which his stored who knows where and who knows in which format)

However, I cannot

- use my existiing .m3u or .xspf playlists (which represent a considerable amount of invested time and thus should be usable)

- or import them

- or even have them recognized in any form or fashion

I'd like to have them recognized by my Internet Radio, which does fine when the lists are served up by another server.

I have all my music ready, being served by other media servers.

I would like to consolidate and just use Plex.

Well, it is not working.

I have added my playlists to the music library.

This is silly.

But perhaps I am just blind.

Perhaps I am making a mistake.

I am not sure, as I cannot find documentation anywhere.

Please show me the error of my ways and restore my faith in this otherwise great product which, at some point when a certain maturity has been reached, I will be more than happy to pay for.

Right now I feel downright made fun of by that full mouthed announcement

Quote:

"So, now onto playlists. We’ve been eager to bring you this feature for ages, as we consider it a key part of any self-respecting media system.  But we wanted to make sure we got it right, and laid the groundwork for a perfect playlist experience across all your devices"

Right!

I also was looking forward to full music playlist support with the ability to import and export playlists in standard format. Without it I am not even interested in having a music section on Plex

A comment of the development team would be nice

Bump

The playlist that Plex uses is not the same as a regular music playlist.  No way to import a music playlist of any type right now, except for iTunes using the iTunes plugin.  Not sure how that works, I don't have iTunes to test.

Same here, but judging from the information Plex put out, it certainly gives you the impression that regular playlists would work.

I have yet to see a definite answer from somebody at Plex, whether this is supposed to work or not.

Nor have I found anything in the documentation to that fact.

If you have some information where I might find that documentation, please let me know.

No, I don't have any documentation.  I just know that when you create a Plex playlist, it basically just becomes entries in the regular library database.  Plex would need to read the regular playlist, match them to the files in the database, then create the new database entries.  It doesn't appear difficult, but so far it hasn't been implemented.

I went ahead and managed to create a method to convert m3u playlists to a Plex version.  I created a new thread for it if you are interested.  I don't use playlists much and m3u was the only one I had on hand.  I'll add other playlist types in future version.

That's cool!  Thanks for the effort. I'll have to try it out.

Nevertheless, I do hope the Plex folks will implement this basic functionality for a media server.

The playlist converter link is a dead, any chance of getting a link that works? I have over 250 M3U music playlists and would absolutely get a plex subscription if I could get my playlists onto my Raspberry Pi server. Thanks in advance for any help.
