How do set up a new server on different computer under the same account?

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Install the Plex media server software
on the same computer, open an ‘incognito’ window in your web browser
direct it at http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
set up the new server and sign it into the existing plex.tv account

I think Otto misread your topic,

Just install plex as normal on new server, Login as normal, Change name from default.
The name is found under Settings>General> Friendly Name.

It should show up in your players browse options under servers
You should have “Plex server 1”
And now see “Plex Server 2”
Or “Bob” and “Tom” (Names are examples, whatever Freindly names you pick should actually show)

If you do not change the names, the player will only show 1 and it might bounce between the the two servers. I had this happen Many versions ago, when I was first setting up plex servers.

No, I didn’t misread.

thanks, but the original servers still shows up, that is on other computer, I cant set up new server, any help on what I am doing would be appreciated.

Where are you seeing the original server?

In the webclient you will see a pull down arrow next to the server name, that will allow you to switch between servers.

On a remote device it is a little trickier to switch between the servers.

I personally only have a Roku. so I hope it is the same cross platform
The media player will take and show items from all servers by default
Under your USER >> Media Server Status
you should see the connection to all the media servers you are connected to.

If you wish to play something from a specific media server do to duplication between the two
goto on the main player screen
More +
Choose the specific server then select the media you wish to play

I am typing to setup a sever on 3 computers, under same account, I had this, bought new life time plan, now when I load Plex, all I get on second computer, is server choice from first computer, I cannot make computer it own server, settings icon does not give opportunity to set it up as own server, what am I doing wrong

Please explain what you are expecting to happen.
Do you want to use the new server at the same time as the old one?
Or do you want to remove the old server?

Keep also in mind that the new server won’t appear at the main page of your web app, after you signed it into your account.
You must use the More... menu item at the left side, at the bottom, to get to it.
Once you can reach it there, you can then go on to add it’s libraries to the side bar or the main screen.

ok I used to have 3 computers each set as plex server on one account, i bought the livetime account and now I want to set up again the three computers on the new account, If i could move that would be great, but I don not have to. I have computer in Wisconsin and two in minnesota. I use the wisconsin to watch live tv on the local channels when in Minnesota, When i logged into each computer before it allowed to set it up a server. When i log into that the old account all three servers show up and I pick which on I want to see, either on my computer or firetv. I would like to set the same with my new account. But when i log in to the new account all I get the same computer, I do not see a place where I can make each computer a separate sever under the same account. Does that make sense, or do you need more, thanks for the help.

Either you go to those machines in person, or you use VPN or remote desktop software for this procedure. Do this on all 3 machines:

Make sure to use the plex credentials of your new account.

thanks, i will try tonight, I think I did on one of the machines and it not work, but not sure I did all the steps, so I will repeat

Having same issue. Was going to start a thread, but I found this one.

I think I know exactly what the OP is talking about. I am trying to install plex server on a 3rd PC under the same account. I have actually done this before successfully and uninstalled it. Today, I decided I wanted to install it again, but it is behaving differently now. For example, lets say I am using PC 3 right now, and PC 3 is where I installed the plex server, but on the upper left corner drop down menu, PC 3 is not an option. I am forced to choose between my existing servers PC 1 and PC 2 which are located on different computers. So any suggestions to go into the settings to change this and that, friendly name, etc. will only be changing those remote servers.

Something has changed. It used to didn’t behave this way, PC 3 would show up as an option for me to add libraries in the past.

I installed the latest server as of today: PlexMediaServer-1.17.0.1709-982421575-x86

All right, so I figured out my issue. Maybe this will help someone else who encounters the same issue.

The problem lies in the fact that you’ve installed the plex server on the computer sometime in the past using a different account. You need to remember which email/account you used. Go into that account, and you will see your server. You need to remove it by going to tools setting in the upper right, then click on the “authorized devices” on the upper left corner. You then remove the server. Once you do that, you can follow OttoKerner’s post above which is:

Install the Plex media server software
on the same computer, open an ‘incognito’ window in your web browser
direct it at http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
set up the new server and sign it into the existing plex.tv account

Once you sign into the account of your choice, you will now see a notification of an unclaimed server. Claim it and live happily ever after.

No you don’t. You can go directly and execute the steps in my above link.

That didn’t work for me, as it seem to not work for the OP either. Even in cognito, the server is not an option. I was still forced to choose my existing servers.
