OK… Say i have Movie A and Movie B in MP4 format. and i have 2 Commentary tracks in M4A format for each of the movies. How does plex know which commentary tracks belong to which movies? is there a best practice folder structures for dealing with movies with multiple audio tracks?
Any direction or advice would be much appreciated!
You cannot use external audio tracks with movies in Plex.
These audio tracks would have to be “muxed in” into the video file - just like a regular audio track.
^^ pretty easy with MKVToolNix.
You wouldn’t have to worry too much about the alignment for a commentary track.
Extract the commentary track as an audio file first.
Then add it to the other video on the second pass.
I’ve never actually done it myself, but Google just provided about 5 YouTube Videos explaining the process when I asked it:
‘adding an audio track with mkvtoolnix’
Of course the end result would be an MKV file, but that’s easy enough to remux back to an MP4 if necessary.
Best tool I’ve seen for doing that is mkvtoolnix. good for adding or removing audio tracks or subtitle files.
Thanks for all the help. Was able to use MKVtoolkit to add the commentary tracks but the track syncing is about 2 seconds off. I know how to adjust it on VLC but it doesn’t save the adjustment you make… Any advice for doing that?
You can also adjust the audio track sync with MKVToolNix and apply it, permanently:
I have done this (once) - and it worked fine.
For you it won’t even be this hard, but I had an idiot encode job with the lips and words offset by about 1.5 seconds. I found a scene with a closing door on camera. I adjusted the delay until the sound of the closing door matched the door actually closing - solved, in moments.
