How does plex handle adding multiple quality of same movie?

Looking at ripping my Blurays into multiple different qualities to cater specifically for a couple different devices (e.g. having a 4K rip & a downscaled 1080p for non-4k devices, or having both HEVC & H.264 options) rather than using transcoding or plex pre-optimisation.

Will plex automatically handle this nicely? e.g. on a device which supports 4K/HEVC direct play will that copy be used; while the 1080p/H.264 will be used on other devices?

yes with the only caveat I am aware of that if your 4K file is HDR and you trying to play 1080p on an HDR capable TV/Device it will transcode the HDR file to maintain that rather than use non-hdr 1080P files
