How does Plex handle duplicate content with multile servers?

Away from my setup so can’t just test things and googling foran hour has not gotten me what I need so I figured I’d just ask.

Proposed setup.

Home and Office each running Plex sever. Different networks but connected by a site to site VPN. Each server has unique content but also lots of duplicate content.

  1. Clients signed into my account will be able to see a unified library but common/duplicate content will only show up once?

  2. Assuming yes to Question 1 – how do Plex clients decide which server to use? Basicly what I am hoping for is for duplicate content servers will use the server on their local network and only use the remote server for content not available locally.

  3. How does Plex handle watched and stopping then starting from watched to position in a situation like this?

  4. Lastly, my home server has issues and crashes a couple of times a week. I believe replacing the NIC will solve this but in case it doesn’t is running a backup server a possability? Basically media is on a share so if powerful server crashes have the weaker computer also acting as a server continute to serve media until I can reboot main?

I Dont think plex would see something watched on 1 server as being watched on another server. It barely identifies duplicates in seperate libraries.
it maybe possible with having both servers utilizing 1 database however you go about that.
This kind of setup would be more a commercial nature than what plex was designed for i believe.

You can try to setup the trakt.tv Plugin to keep the ‘watched’ entries of both servers in sync.
