I’m about ready to uninstall honestly.
ALL my movies will stop playing and error all the frigging time.
I keep getting errors about the network not being fast enough or says it lost connection to the server when I play movies.
My server is setup on an old gaming rig with a AMD quad core running at 3.6ghz with 8gigs of ram running WIndows 7.
This computer is sitting right next to my modem hardwired to the switch literally 5 feet.
I have 100mb DL/20mb UP internet connection but I assume that shouldnt be a factor as Im trying to merely watch on my network.
All my movies are stored on a External hard drive connected to the same computer that runs the Plex Server.
I keep rebooting the plex server, clearing cache in all the apps, turning down video and audio qualities but nothing works.
The App on my firestick and the one on the Smart tv both do the same thing. I even tried running cat five straight to the tv to bypass wireless.
No matter what I do I cant finish a frigging movie.
Whats the secret to getting this damn server to just work???
THAT and some more details about your setup, such as which exact client do you use and which version of it (I understand there’s a Fire Stick in the game, not sure about the Smart TV), what kind of movies are you trying to play (Blu-Ray/DVD/other rips, mp4/avi/mkv, any details on the codecs used)…
do you get the same kind of errors when playing things via Plex Web in your browser?
I was looking thru my logs… which file would be useful? Theres an analysis file, ones that say server 1/server 2 etc… Not really sure which one to post. My Server is running Version 1.12.04829 if that helps. Movies are all .mkv high quality. I use plex Apps on multiple devices throughout the house. Everything from the ones you can download straight to your Smart TV (I have Vizios and a Samsung), to four version 1 Rokus, and a brand new firestick.
Do you think I could be bottlenecked at external harddrive? It uses USB to the computer.

The USB hard drive would never be a problem unless it is allowed to sleep and then usually it would just cause some delays. Also, if it is allowed to sleep then it would be a VERY poor place for your Plex data directory.
As far as which log to attach: Just follow the link I posted above and zip up all your logs and attach them here and the “experts” will extract what they need.
I have attached my logs.
Also to clarify. My server is running on C: Drive, the movies are in a shared folder on the external drive attached to same rig.

OK. Now, hopefully an expert will wander (stumble?) in here and take a good look and maybe help resolve the problem or at least ask more specific questions that I can to diagnose the issue.
Of course you need to keep in mind what an expert really is:
Expert (x-spurt)
X - is a mathematical term for something unknown
Spurt - is a drip of water under pressure
Therefore an expert is an unknown drip under pressure.
hmm… do you have the logs of your Samsung client as well?
The Plex Server Log claims the client is interrupting/closing the connection “forcibly” when you were watching e.g. Alien (roughly at 1:33:25, so in the middle of the movie).

PS: side note… horrible file naming (however that’s not related to your issue).
I dont think I had the issue during Alien last night. I fell asleep before finishing it. It was bad on my Vizio in the living room yesterday evening when my son and I were trying to watch a Star Wars. It kept throwing errors while watching on the firestick that was connected to the Vizio. I Got pissed and switched to the Plex app the was installed on the vizio itself with tbe same result. Then I got really pissed and ran cat5 to the tv with same poor result. I was also adjusting video quality settings but that didnt help either. While it doesnt happen every time it happens 80% of the time.
oh… I see it.
can you re-check the settings of those clients?
Plex believes it has a limit of 4000 kbit/s given by the client. This causes it to transcode which is apparently bringing the server to its knee (and resulting in poor picture quality).
Where would I find that in the app? In plex on the firestick i have video settings but all I can change is like home viewing or internet streaming to 8mb or 4mb etc… Outside plex in the application manager I dont see anything like that. Also if your talking about the 4mb (4000kb) play back limit I set, that was done to try and fix the error. It was originally set on max when I was getting errors.
Should I be converting these bluray rips down to something smaller? Right now they are pretty big 1080p .mkv files that range anywhere from 6 to 10gigs in size.
Can you watch your Server in a Browser window on a PC or Mac, and take the firestick and Telly out of the equation for testing purposes, you should be able to log in via Plex.tv and by local ip address etc, checked the Firewall on your windows installation? (not trying to teach you suck eggs)…
Or even use a mobile app iOS or Android to test the server works as well… you might be able to figure out what is actually not working, you should be able to watch on your server machine in a browser window or even the Plex Media Player app.
Just a thought the USB HD is it plugged into at least a USB 2 port, on the motherboard or a front hub on this “old gaming PC”
My server is an old 2009 White Mac Mini, USB HD connected never have a problem with a USB HD as storage drive.
Its a usb 2.0 on the back of the mobo. Just tested it in the browser on the same pc that the server is on and it seems to still have issues. I didnt get the error but some of the movies wouldnt play. I would get the loading circle icon but it would never play. Im going to remove the external drive from its shell and install it directly into the pc.
I have since installed the Plex Server on a different computer. I moved my hd with all my movies and the tuner card over as well. It still errors but not as frequently. Sometimes you can work past the error by fast fowarding alittle too. On the first rig it was running on I also had my ispy camera software running too so I think that might have contributed. Im going to just chalk it up to that as cause. Thanks all.
