@OttoKerner, could you eleborate on that last option, adding the mp4 metadata?
Iâve used mp3tag (which also supports mp4 containers) to add metadata to episodes of a TV series that is not on TheTVDB, but the names are still not showing up in Plex. Instead it still shows as âEpisode 1â etc.
Update: I copied one episode to a new folder, and there the correct name does show! But how to I get it to show for the existing folder? Iâve tried âAnalyseâ, âRefresh metadataâ and âGet infoâ, but none of these update the episode title.
Update 2: Sorry, this is getting more peculiar. Apparently, the new test folder I created, had a name that was recognised as the title of an existing series. And this seemed to be the reason for the episode title being extracted from the metadata. Because a third folder I created, with random text as folder name, and the same episode copied into that folder, does not get the episode name extracted from metadata⌠My head is starting to spin hereâŚ
Folder structure and folder names are very important with tv shows.
If you post the Plex media info XML of this affected episode, we could find out what is happening.
I tried the Plex Dance also, which made no difference. (The series were gone from the library during cleaning, but returned again without episode titles when adding again).
Following is the XML for the episode where I added metadata to the mp4 video file:
That said this approach isnât really the tidiest option when looking for those shows in Plex.
It will just be buried in a Channel 5 folder.
When you then add BBC, ITV and Channel 4 folders itâs far from friendly when you actually want to sit down and watch a particular one.
Worst case if you have the patience you can (as you plan to do) add it to tmdb and take as much info as available from tvdb.
However from a purist point of view, although imdb allows shows and movies tmdb doesnât allow shows as far as iâm aware. That episode was created specifically for Channel 5 and doesnât really have a place on tmdb, so you can definitely expect someone to come along and delete it.
To add IMDb is wrong with the year.
It aired on New Yearâs Eve 2016
Generally its best not to fight it and just create a library in Plex for TV based stuff eg.
Documentaries and a movie based library eg. Documovies.
If you do decide to go with the flow then for that particular episode the folder would be named
Channel 5 (UK) Documentaries
and the file would be
Channel 5 (UK) Documentaries - S2016E80 - Ken Dodd - In His Own Words.ext
In a TV based library Plex will then have no issues pulling the metadata available.
For all your other stuff its it falls within the tvdb remit you should be good just googling
âtvdb episode nameâ
This indicates that this series is âunmatchedâ.
In this state, it cannot use any metadata agents.
You need to match it, even if it is just the âPersonal Media Showsâ agent,
then Plex will read the embedded metadata using the âLocal Media Assetsâ agent.
You go to the top level of that show (i.e. when you can see a list of the seasons).
Then you click on the ellipsis
âMatchâ
âAuto Matchâ - âPersonal Media Showsâ
Cheers for that! I had thought to check tvdb but I would never have thought to search under Channel 5 Docs. I just tried âKen Doddâ and âin his own wordsâ which got me nowhere. Thanks for laying out the options so clearly, it is appreciated. Just have a few health issues at the mo but will decide which path to choose later on.
Thanks again, red rose forever!
Thatâs why itâs just easier doing it via google.
Actually manually searching tvdb itself can be painful.
I have to confess I emigrated. Only as far as Cheshire though.
Just to add, that the idea of searching via âbbc documentariesâ, âitv documentariesâ has proved extremely fruitful and I suspect that I will now be able to find all my other âmissingâ documentaries.
It might take a tedious search of one, then another channel names to find them but we will get there in the end.
Thanks again.
Again this is why I suggest just typing tvdb and episode name.
Though I kinda knew the Ken Dodd was either itv or c5. Just âtvdb Ken Dodd In His Own Wordsâ in your search engine gives you the direct link to it on tvdb.
