I have no albums in my 300 piece music library. All are singles. All i want to show up is the song title and artist. Care nothing about album name from which they came nor track listing, or all the other items. All are mp3s to which ive embedded my desired art. How do i apply the naming convention to singles and have it all work?
That’s fine for apps that still have Grid view for View Tracks. Everything but Table View was removed from several apps (Plex Web, Plex for Windows, Plex for Linux, and probably Plex for Mac) 2 years ago.
I haven’t tried to make a go of it yet; i’m looking for a naming “template” from you guys. When I said I wanted nothing but artist and song title to show, I should have included song art too. But I guess that will show anyway since it is embedded. So how would you name the files? For instance, if you had the song Twist and Shout by the Beatles, tell me how you’d do it. I’m sure I’m going to have to rename all the files. Another question I forgot to ask is, what is the difference between throwing the songs on my Plex server, versus using PlexAmp?
Not possible. It’s called “album art”. And that is how it works in Plex.
Your only chance would be to make every track into a separate “single” release [a “single album”, if you will].
Which requires you to adapt the folder structure and the embedded metadata of your files. Then you will also have separate artwork for every “single”.
You could put all 300 singles into one new album called “Singles” with Album Artist = Various Artists. Leave the Artist tag as the actual track artist. Before setting track numbers, sort the tracks by Artist or Title as you prefer.
I am not sure Plex will handle a 300 track album, that but it’s easy to try.
This should get you the list view that you want, the downside is that you would lose the artwork per track, because Plex only saves artwork at the album level.
To preserve the per-track art I think you have to make 300 albums, each with one track in it. Then you have the art, but navigation is harder. However, you could then make a Playlist with each track in it, and use that as your main display.
Any of these changes, including new folder structure, would be pretty easy with a tool like mp3tag as long as the tag data is good.
Unfortunately this is just a use case that Plex is not made for. Plex really, really wants a traditional Album + Track structure so it can look up album metadata. Anything else and you are swimming upstream.
I also wish they would add better support for loose singles… I bet almost everyone has some, even if they aren’t the core of their library. A magic Album Artist name of “Singles” that gets special handling, kind of like they do for Various Artists, would be great.
Tried the latter suggestion on a few files and it is working!! Gonna be a lot of work creating 300 folders but the result is what I’m looking for. Thank you so much!!
