How to best run plex media server with new build

I recently built a new File server pc exclusively for serving files for plex. It has a 5800x, 64gb ram, 10x18TB HDDs. I have a few questions on how best to utilize this as I have an HTPC at home currently and this is meant to replace it so I don’t need a huge pc in my media center anymore. Would I be better off running plex media server exclusively on this machine (under win server 22) or should I just store the media on it and link it to my current machine? That build has a i7-8700k, gtx 1050 ti, 16gb of ram. I run kodi on it, plex media server, and hyper spin.

Better put the 1050 into the plex server. Transcoding 4k hdr will bring the 5800x to uncomfortable places. AMD CPU’s aren’t as great for Plex transcoding. The GPU will fix that.

Rog thanks for the heads up. I actually don’t have anything 4k I stick to 1080p. What about transcoding via ram?

A ram drive can be really helpful if you have an SSD (of any type) and you don’t want to increase the wear and tear. However, if you are planning on transcoding, relying on an AMD cpu isn’t a good choice. The gpu will really help. There is no hardware support for AMD and your older i7-8700k without the GPU would run rings around your 5800x for transcoding everything but subtitles.
