I have all of my TV shows / Anime grouped into subfolders by 1 of 4 ways: by Genre, Franchise, Studio, or Artist (examples below). I know Plex doesn’t like subfolders and it will confuse subfolder names for TV Show names. I know the only way around this is to manually add each “root” subfolder to the library. For my Anime alone, that will be 28 folders. That’s not that bad, but when I have to do the same thing for my other TV Shows and Documentary Series, it will become a headache.
The funny thing is that I use the same subfolder structure for my Movies and Plex has done a great job of scanning everything. But, each movie is in its own folder with the Movie Title and Year. If you know why this works with my movies, but not my TV Shows, please tell me.
QUESTION
Is there a way to bulk add folder paths to the sections_locations with an SQL command without breaking the Plex database?
IDEA
Use DB Browser for SQLite to edit the sections_locations in my com.plexapp.plugins.library.db. But, I don’t know if that’s breaking something elsewhere in Plex. Please tell me if I’m being stupid.
ATTEMPT
I executed the following SQL command and it seemed to work. Only 4 (of 28) subfolders are added here. It took a long time to scan and it seemed like the folders disappeared from the Library’s settings, but it looks like everything scanned okay and the folders eventually returned to the settings.
INSERT INTO section_locations (library_section_id, root_path)
VALUES
("66","Z:\_Animation\East\_Artists\Go Nagai"),
("66","Z:\_Animation\East\_Series\Sci-Fi\Ghost In The Shell"),
("66","Z:\_Animation\East\_Studios\Gainax"),
("66","Z:\_Animation\East\Sci-Fi");
Please tell me what you think and you’ll find the subfolder examples below.
Thanks in advance!
EXAMPLES: TV Show Subfolders
Artists
X:_Anime\_Artists\Go Nagai
Franchise
X:_Anime\_Franchise\Sci-Fi\Ghost In The Shell\Ghost in the Shell - Arise
X:_Anime\_Franchise\Sci-Fi\Ghost In The Shell\Ghost in the Shell - SAC
Studio:
X:_Anime\_Studios\Gainax\Gurren Lagann
Genre:
X:_Anime\Sci-Fi\Cowboy Bebop
–UPDATE–
I’ve used this for a couple of libraries now without a problem. It seems to work best if you bulk add folders to a fresh library that only has one initial folder.
