How to burn in original movie subtitles in foreign spoken parts

hello.

i have ripped many blu rays into MKV but for say Godfather 1 or Return of the jedi jabba scenes how can i rip in the english subtitles that appear when i play the blu ray.

I do not want subtitles all the time just in the non english parts.

Could someone please give me a step by step guide as i have tried a few things with handbrake but must be doing something wrong.

I have a synology DS18 NAS but when i find the appropriate subtitle track via VLC player and enable it the NAS goes into transcode mode and is not powerful enough.

thanks

Jim

This should get you started

and this is how I do it:

Acquire the sub file containing the foreign language subs, if onboard, load it, or import it, then burn it in via the appropriate check box during the encode.

Note: if you attempt to include subs in any way, without burning them in, they’ll appear packed up in the file as ASS subs - and really make an ASS of themselves. I mux those in later, after the encode (so they won’t be ASS). I burn ‘forced’ subs during the encode.

yes thanks currently got the godfather encoding. i have found the subittles in english for the Italian scenes on subtitle track 1. i have selected them and set to burn in.

audio is set to pass through and video to same as source/

hope this worls thanks for getting back to me.

You can make ‘previews’ right in the area where the goombas are speaking - to see if you got it right (I’d never survive that 4 hour encode to find out if it worked)(never)(in a million years)
lol

got 8 hours on my laptop its only and I3 will see how it is in the morning.

do you have to use an “external Srt” file. As i have managed to fine the original text subtitles from the blu ray on subtitle track 16 but it never seems to burn in when i encode it
i must be doing something wrong

thanks

You don’t have to use SRT files (Import).

You can use any of the embedded tracks thusly:

Pull down ‘Add Track’ and select the specific track or select all then delete the tracks you don’t need (X) Enable (Check) ‘Burn In’.

In the above example - I happen to know sub track #3 is the Forced Sub Track. I have selected ‘Burn In’ for that track. Note: I will Delete all other tracks with the ‘X’ before encoding - or there WILL be trouble. Read on.

If Foreign Audio Scan actually does something useful - I’ve never found it. If it shows up - delete it with the ‘X’ (unless you can find something useful for it to do).

Delete (X) ALL Unwanted tracks - or HB will turn them into ASS Embedded Subs - and you do NOT want that
 trust me.

If you want ‘non-burned’ sub tracks included in the file - do that AFTER Handbrake by muxing them in with Xmedia Recode (or something similar). Handbrake will absolutely make ASS subs out of anything it touches (that it doesn’t burn in) - making a total ASS out of itself.

ive tried that but when i watched Godfather back when there are in Italy no subs

what do i click on after that - my preset was Dolby HD passthrough Super 30 surround preset.

thanks again

do i click Reload on subs

You must first identify the forced sub tracks for your language - and there may not be any if you’re using a Disk intended for somewhere you ain’t (don’t know why that would happen, but anyway
).

I identify forced sub tracks with MediaInfo - by looking at the ‘Element Count’. The little numbers indicate there isn’t much in them and that means it’s probably a forced sub track.

THEN you make a ‘Preview’ in the area where the subs will be - to see if it works - before you settle in for a nice, warm 10 hour encode

I have no idea what kind of audio that is - but if it works for ya, I’m thrilled. I tend to create audio formats I can use and Direct Play. I’m funny that way.

thanks will look into that .all of my Plex media is from original sources I own so can stick the blu ray disc in and take it from there.

How do you do preview in handbrake

thanks again for your help. i’ll get there eventually ha ha ha!!!

When the Preview Dialog appears, Slide the bar to get to the place where the subs go - so you can see if they’re gonna work. You’ll probably need to resize the Preview Screen - it’s all over the place.

oh crap! Ive never noticed that option to busy looking at other stuff :slightly_smiling_face:

cue a massive tumbleweed on this one !!!

If you want to preview to make sure you are using the correct subtitle track before starting a long handbrake encode, open the video file in VLC and select the subtitle track you want. I find that faster than queuing a preview in handbrake.

And if you don’t want to compress the video file to maintain original quality, you can use MKVToolNix to set the forced subtitle flag so that it displays when needed during playback. I do that for all of my 4K rips where I do not want to loose quality.

That annoys me severely (when there are more than 3 UNIDENTIFIED sub tracks), but what doesn’t annoy me is finding the forced sub track with Mediainfo and Previewing a sample to check it out.

Bingo:

Also, save yourself the time and hassle of trying to find the correct subtitle track (Star Wars was a pain) and reference this google Sheet. It’s constantly being updated.

Hi scott thanks for jumping in . Been doing that if you see early in my post but I have no knowledge of toolnix but have installed it. Could you give me a guide how to nudge in the subtitles please.

thanks got the Blu rays already on MKV just need to get the subs to play.

Sorry for not seeing that, just trying to skim through while at work :upside_down_face:

Excuse me if this isn’t completely straight forward (I don’t have MKVToolNix on my work computer so I’m going off screenshots)

In the MKVToolNix GUI, go to the header editor on the left. Drag your MKV file onto it.
Then expand the forced subtitle track, assuming you ripped the forced subtitle as it’s own track.
You will see a section for a forced flag that you can switch from No to Yes. Save the file, and you should be good to go!
