Recently upgraded to the latest version plex media server. During initial startup I was given the opportunity to change the visual appearance of the interface. I changed it to a light background, I hate hate hate it. I’m now unable to see my content, all the text that was white has now blended into a white background. I’ve searched all the settings and can not find where I can change it back! Any help out there in Plex land?
It is a client, not server, setting.
Check Settings → Appearance.
Not on all clients. I’ve noticed it on Plex HTPC and the Smart TV apps.
Plex HTPC:
Ford guy thanks for response! Although I cannot find this window in any menu. It does look like the window that got me into this stupid mess. I found an article to reset home screen customizations described in the user settings that to eludes me! As you can see the contrast setting makes it nearly impossible to read any text. I’ve tried to delete the app and reinstall but this doesn’t help. I cannot see how to send a screenshot.
What client are you using?
Not sure what you mean. How can I tell?
What’s the name of the app/executable and on what platform are you running it?
I believe it’s Plex media server running on a Mac mini running high sierra.
Plex ninja thanks for your continued responses!
As per FordGuy’s initial response:
The server itself doesn’t have an option to configure the appearance… that’s only available in some of the Plex player apps
Thanks for your response. When I launch plex on my Mac mini it opens a page on Safari, which displays my media content and plex streaming services. I’m assuming that is the client side of plex. During the last server upgrade, a window popped up and I was given an opportunity to change the visual interface. If I recall right there was a light and dark mode along with a few others. I chose the light mode. When it changed the whole appearance had radically changed to the point that any interface text was invisible with the light back ground. I hate it I can’t read most of the text content as it is washed out. Ford guy was kind enough to show me some settings windows to address this but I’m unable to locate them in any of the tool or general settings on any client app. Where are they? This is my predicament… I did find a reset option that I was hoping to get me back to normal even if I had to reset all my preferences, but this did nothing. On another note I used to play my content directly off of my Mac mini through the TV this was cumbersome due to no functional remote. Since then I have purchased a 4k Samsung 9000 TV and with the app installed it is amazing as I can use my TV remote for the most convenient functions. I’m in the process of upgrading the Mac mini drive so that it can be system upgradable, which I believe will allow me to use the HTPC? Hopefully this will get me out of current predicament. Any further recommendations would be dearly appreciated. I really hope to get this issue resolved as this has been exactly what I’ve been searching for, for my Blu-ray media collection.
I don’t think OP is referring to a client’s color theme options.
It’s probably this visual bug and nothing to do with any “appearance options or settings”.

Swifty yes yes yes. You have discovered my predicament! I have read the Reddit articles of those experiencing the same issues. Visual changes and extra memory to run the page. I have gotten these memory errors also. With only plex and safari running. I believe this is the key to my problem. My Mac mini is maxed out on OS upgrades due to the Fusion Drive. I’m in the process of upgrading the drive which will allow me to up the OS and in turn Safari. This is a sensible solution. You provided the key to unlock my mystery. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
