How to choose transcode audio targets (Audio transcoding to Opus rather than AC3)

TV manufacturers do not support passing TrueHD from TV based apps. TrueHD will be transcoded by Plex Media Server. Some do support TrueHD passthrough for devices attached to HDMI inputs on the TV.

If you want TrueHD, you will need to buy a Nvidia Shield Pro and connect it to an HDMI input on your receiver or an HDMI input on your TV.

I was thinking that… but what got me intrigued was, if i past a DTS-HD MA signal the receciver picked it up as DTS-ES Mtx, sound was jumping and intermittant.
I do have a way round this predicament and that is to encode the file with FFWorks, convert audio to EAC3, it works fine while keeping 7.1, it does report as 5.1 but i am getting all channels.

DTS-ES Matrix is 5.1 (Wikipedia), so the app is most likely passing the dts 5.1 (lossy) core, not the full dts-HD MA (lossless) signal.

Not sure why you are getting intermittent audio.

I had not heard of FFWorks. Looks interesting. I’ll check it out.

Identifying EAC3 7.1 as 5.1 may be a cosmetic bug in Plex. I’ve some media with EAC3 7.1 audio. On the pre-play screen it shows up as EAC3 5.1, but Plex still direct plays the file and sends the audio to my receiver as EAC3 7.1.

My setup:
Nvidia Shield Pro <–HDMI–> Denon AVR-X4300H <–HDMI-ARC–> LG B7 OLED

It is trial software and have only recently used it as handbrake, for whatever reason doesnt support 7.1.
I do use another program, all be it abit buggy on the gui, FastFlix its called: FastFlix
Takes abit of setting up at first.

Yes, RX-V681, it does not support eArc.
I just test DTS-HD MA 7.1, it works, the AVR shows only DTS, so probably is downsampled, but the Plex server shows direct play for the audio, strange…
Tried 3 months old versions of Plex Android TV, all of them are broken…
I am 100% DD+ was working month ago…

EAC3 5.1 with Dolby Atmos plays 100% with HDMI pass through enabled on current android tv client.
More investigating done with EAC3 7.1, detected as 3F2M/LFE, same surround signal is played back through SL-SR-SBL-SBR, therefore not exactly 7.1 as first thought.

Using the beta Android TV client 8.29.0 and can confirm that TrueHD 7.1 is being transcoded to EAC3 7.1, its feckin glorious!

Just tested 8.29.0.30433 (beta) and TrueHD transcodes properly to DD+

Hi, with the latest version all the formats that before were correctly transcoded to AC3 (like EAC3) with Optical Passthrough AC3+DTS, now get transcoded again to Opus and the audio is totally messed up. Can you please revert to the working mechanism? Why the hell do you keep breaking things to fix another?

Same here. Audio is transcoded from EAC3 5.1 to OPUS 5.1 according to Tautulli, but receiver receives only stereo.

Receiver is connected over optical to tv, Plex runs on native Android TV app.

I’m also having this issue and it’s making me crazy. It now transcodes to OPUS 2.0 instead of AC3 5.1. Let’s hope a fix is on the way soon.

I contacted one of the Android TV devs here and sent him my logs. He checked the logs and he thinks he found the problem. He will let me know when a fix has been made. So they are working on it.

Great to hear it’s getting looked at, I have the same problem, AAC 5.1 transcoding to OPUS… Quite unfortunate for us optical users…

I’m hopeful that this gets fixed soon. It was a rough weekend trying to figure out what we could watch on Plex that wouldn’t error out. Wife acceptance factor was quite low this weekend.
