How to copy subtitles text?

When I pause the playback in the browser I cannot select text in the subtitles and hence cannot copy it. Is there a way to remove this limitation?

Open the corresponding .srt file?

Why? No.
I need to copy the text that I see on the screen. To translate it.

Do you have access to the server?

If so, grab the media files. If the subtitles are embedded, you can use Subtitle Edit to extract and convert them.

What do you think the .srt file contains? True it could also be embedded.

Unfortunately, there is no way to grab just the simple text that is on-screen and copy it for a web search (translate). People here are offering alternate ways to get to the text, but these are more involved and certainly not that helpful if you need to do this often or just need to do it once for a video.

I thought I once that there are “picture” phone apps that can translate if you take a pic of text.

Subtitle Edit is the best way to do it.
It’s free and all you have to do is point it at your video or external subtitle file.
It even has a special “translate subs” mode, where you can see both the original and the translated file at the same time.
