I have an Apple TV 4th gen with HDRomeRun PRIME and a Verizon FiOS mCard. Live streaming seems to be running very smoothly, however, I cannot find how to disable closed captioning. I find it weird that it displays in the first place, since the FAQ page states that CC isn’t supported yet.
Similar issue for me, but with the iOS app! Can’t find a way to turn it off with live TV. I see there’s an option to turn CC -> OFF when a program has been recorded (this is different than in the subtitles menu)

I just started getting this on the latest version (4.17) of the iOS app with PMS 1.8.0.4109. I don’t watch much Live TV on iOS, so it’s possible that it’s been present since the version @Protocol_7 was on when it was reported. Surprised there aren’t more reports of this yet. Are either/both of you on the 1.8.2.x PMS? I’m about to upgrade today, but I’ll probably need to roll back since there are reported issues with 1.8.1+ and multiple HDHR tuners…
I guess we should take this as a good sign that CC is finally here for Live TV, but the iOS/AppleTV teams need to add a switch to the Live TV playback menu (and default it to off).
Same deal. Can turn off CC when playing back DVR recordings, but not live. Still, surprised it’s defaulting to CC when playing back as well.
Android TV (1.7.4.x release or 1.7.5.x beta) does not show CC during Live TV playback or show CC/subtitles available from the DVR playback menu for the same recording. I suspect, as I said before, this is just a matter of the clients catching up to the server. Still, would be pretty awful on a primary playback device like an Apple TV.
Same issue with CC displayed by default on iOS app, and I am unable to find toggle, even after server and app updates. Does not do it on Android app, however.
Hey all, it looks like I found a workaround to fixing this problem.
Open media that’s already on your Plex server (i.e. a movie), swipe down on the Apple remote, and then navigate to subtitles, and turn them off completely. This seems to disable closed captioning on live TV as well. Previously, my settings for subtitles was “Auto”. Going back to a saved media file and re-enabling subtitles for that file seems to re-enable closed captioning on Live TV as well.
I hope Plex implements a proper CC option for Live TV in the near future, but for now this gets the job done.
The above fix doesn’t work for me. When I go into my subtitles menu on content already on my Plex server, subtitles is already marked NONE and there is no option to change it. Seems like an issue in the software that Plex is going to need to address at some point. Again, this is only happening watching Live TV on iOS.
I can confirm this works! Even if your subtitle selection in the swipe down is set to OFF, select OFF. Then return to LiveTV and no more subtitles! Thanks Protocol_7! Great tip! At least on my set-up. YMMV.
Also, you have to select Subtitles Off from the Swipe Down menu while the movie is playing, select Off, even if it already shows Off, return to Live TV, subtitles off. Conversely, selecting Subtitles On from the Swipe Down menu while the movie is playing, then returning to Live TV, the subtitles are back.
