How to disable end credits switching content to small screen?

Hi,

We generally really like the ability to skip intros but we’re having issues with the credits. At least 75% of the time, Plex shrinks the content into a small “next up” screen before the show/movie itself has actually ended. It’s become quite frustrating to miss the end of the show/movie this way - and we don’t want to have to try to catch it and re-click on the content to bring it back up to full screen.

Is there a way to disable this part? I’ve searched the settings on the Plex AppleTV app and our server and also did a web search to try to figure it out. Could anyone please help?

Not sure what I need to disable/change and I’d like to still be able to skip intros. The only setting that seemed close was switching when the show is considered finished but I thought this would only be for “marking completed” so to speak. Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Player Version#: (AppleTV App) 8.22 (6477)

I believe the setting you want to disable is Autoplay on the client. But I’m not 100% on that. I have noticed that some shows we have drop to the next up screen a little too early. Kind of wish there was a way we could edit the credits or title start/end times.

Edit: There is also the Enable credits detection in each library’s advanced options. You could turn that off for your libraries and you won’t get sent to the Next Up screen until you hit the actual end of the video. Only thing is if you access another person’s server, and they have credit detection on you’ll still get that at the credit flag point.

I’ve not seen this happen in Plex yet (my TV’s client app must be out-of-date), but I have to say I absolutely hate the idea.

TV broadcasters here do this all the time, either shrinking the credits or speeding up the credits (I really hope Plex doesn’t start doing that either), and it’s so annoying.

I mean, there are many other very easy ways to skip the credits if you want, so I too would love to hear (in advance) how to TURN OFF this behavior.

EDIT: So what happens if the is an epilogue scene after the credits?

Plex usually recognizes those… if there’s a mid/post credits scene, Plex will offer a Skip Credits button. Only the final credit will usually shrink the image on some players and show the remaining credits from the post-play screen.

So, for others who are interested in this, I found an additional setting that I’m trying and will report back if it solves the issue. I’m not ready to turn off the skip credits feature entirely BUT I also hate how it shrinks the show before it’s completely finished. So, there are two additional settings - one is related to when the show is considered “watched”. This is adjustable via a percentage of the show. Default was 90% and I just switched it to 95%.

However, it’s the next related setting I hope will work the magic. It’s under the same section of settings>library and it’s “Video play completion behaviour”. This has a selection of multiple options:

  1. at selected threshold percentage
  2. at final credit marker position
  3. at first credit marker position
  4. earliest between threshold percent and first credits marker

It was set at #4, which is clearly the earliest option. I switched it to #2. I’m thinking that the “Video play completion behaviour” is whatever the default action is (not quite sure how to change what the default behaviour is). Anyway, I’m hoping that since the default behaviour appears to be to switch to the “Up Next” screen (shrinking the show), by switching to “At final credit marker” that it won’t shrink the show until the end of the credits - however it should still bring up the “skip credits” button. Fingers crossed this will allow the show to play into the credits without shrinking BUT still leaving me the option to skip the credits and move on, if we wish. As @AnotherAussie said, it’s super annoying to have the shrink before the show is entirely finished. To quote “Breakfast Club”: “It’s an imperfect world…screws fall out.” I know Plex works to get the credit detection darn close but there are times where it’s just imperfect. I’ll report back once I’ve been able to watch a few more shows till the end and see how this resolves the issue.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I really appreciate it.

I just want to turn this off. I’ve tried every suggestion here and none of them works.

To make it perfectly clear: I want the video to remain full-size until the show ends. Period.

Please fix this, Plex.

We will bring improved options to the Apple TV client in the future to give users more control over this behaviour and other player-related settings (auto skip etc)

We agree it’s not a great experience right now on Apple where you cannot control auto-minimising the player and showing post-play the credits, so we plan to temporarily disable this behaviour in an upcoming release.

We will then reenable the behaviour at a later date once we also have a configurable setting for users.

Why is this even a feature at all? Are there actually users out there who want their movie minimized before it’s over, and can’t be bothered to press the single button on the remote to do so?

Yes, there are.

What pleasure do they derive from that and why?

It depends on the presentation. Movies and TV shows that have significant action that takes place during and post-credits are where this feature turns into a bug, and those are pretty widespread practices these days.

Regardless, I look at a movie like I would a symphony. The opening credits set the mood for the piece, the key if you will, and the closing credits is like the end of the symphony.

I find it incredibly jarring when I’m watching, say, a moody contemplative film and just as the credits roll, some obnoxious screen pops up breaking me out of the mood. As I described in another thread, to me it’s like someone replaced the last few minutes of a symphony with accordion music.

I’m sure there’s a reason for it, but I literally can not conceive of why anyone would want this. It’s like defacing a painting.

Thank you very much. It has been frustrating to not be able to switch this feature off. It’s given me flashbacks to when the networks first began squishing end credits in order to shout about some other show.

I know, isn’t that horrible?! I don’t understand how people can stand that.

Go to the movies. 99% of the theater is standing and walking out the second the credits roll.

I suspect they’re trying to get to their cars before everyone else does.

But that doesn’t answer my question. I didn’t ask if people could stand it, because clearly, they can; I asked how they could do so.

I just wanted to follow up on this topic. I really appreciate all the comments and hearing from Plex directly that this “feature” will be removed shortly until settings are introduced so that users can customize how it works.

The reason I wanted to follow-up is because Plex is now cutting off the shows with several minutes left to run. I don’t mean several minutes of credits, I mean it’s shrinking the image in the midst of the climax of the show with at least 5 minutes left. This issue appears to have gotten worse and it’s super frustrating and jarring to suddenly have the image shrink during the height of the storyline.

Really looking forward to this behavior getting removed. Any timeline as to when it will be disabled? Thanks!

Well, that’s not supposed to happen. Not until credits start actually.

As I understand the feature, it can pull shared credit start points from shared points on plex directly instead of from your media…

if you read Credits Detection | Plex Support and go to the “Contributing Marker Data to “the Cloud”” section it details it. But basically, you could have a copy of a show that does not have the extra 5 minutes of silent credits for foreign dubs, and you are using a shared marker. Since I make sure all my copies have that removed, I set the marker source to local detection only. So, I’ve not run into that issue of dropping to the next video screen.

Edit: the drawback is your plex server is churning a lot more at night to find all those credits start points.

Let’s keep it civil here.

I’m closing this topic since folks can’t be civil. There are other topics that have instructions on how to turn off.

One of them with instructions how to do so can be found here.
