How to disable indirect connections?

Server Version#: 1.32.6.7557
Player Version#: 4.116.1

Question, is there any way to disable indirect play and only allow direct play?

Indirect play and direct play are two different concepts:

  • Indirect: The client is unable to make a direct connection to your server, so the stream has to be routed through Plex’s bandwidth-limited Relay service. The Troubleshooting Remote Access support article is a good place to start if you want to troubleshoot indirect connections.
  • Direct Play: Plex doesn’t have to transcode the file, sending it as-is to the client for playback.

Indirect connections typically result in content transcoding due to bandwidth restrictions, but direct play is still possible if the original bitrate is low enough. You can disable Relay via Settings > Network > Enable Relay, but that typically just results in the client being unable to connect to your server at all.

If you want to disable video transcoding, you can do so under Settings > Transcoder > Disable video stream transcoding. This doesn’t necessarily mean that everything will suddenly direct play though, it will instead fail to play items that have to transcode the video due to client/bandwidth limitations.
