Indirect connection with direct stream?

Quick question - is it possible to have an indirect connection with a direct stream? I am sharing with a friend who states that beside my name when they are connecting it says “indirect”, but when they are watching something through their amazon fire TV, I can see that it is a direct stream (or connection) - is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. A Direct Stream and Indirect Connection are 2 separate things.

In other words: you can have direct play over an indirect connection, if the bitrate of the streamed file doesn’t exceed the limits of an indirect connection.
1mbps without Plex Pass
2mbps with Plex Pass

OK thanks, i sort of now understand the difference, but I just don’t know whats better for what i want to accomplish. My goal is to eventually setup a NAS and share with others remotely.

Would it be better to try and setup a direct connection rather than an indirect connection? The indirect connections seems to be working for most that I’m sharing with, however, for whatever reason, the remote access disconnects and I have to restart for it to reconnect. No firewall is not running, but every now and then I connect and disconnect a VPN, not sure if this is the issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can’t think of any scenario where direct isn’t preferrable.

But yes if you occasionally connect to a VPN on the server then you might have to explicitly bind Plex to the non-VPN interface.
