Settings → Transcoder → Disable video stream transcoding.
You must select “show advanced” at top of page to see the setting.
Unsure if a Plex Pass is required. Not mentioned in Plex documentation.
Plex Pass not needed. Keep in mind though, that setting does not force clients to try an direct play a file. If the client wants a transcode, playback will just fail and stop.
I have tried both the client (Plex Web, launched in Chrome) that comes when installing Plex Media Server in Windows, as well as a client on an LG CX9.
In both these cases, it wants to transcode a movie even though I have setup both to disable it as explained in HDR to SDR Tone Mapping | Plex Support, but also by trying to set the client to play in original format.
Why does this happen? I cannot play the movie since it is 4K HDR and transcoding it will not work as the media server host is not powerful enough.
Web cannot play HDR content so you cannot get it to direct play. If you disable the option to transcode, you’ll get the error that your cpu isn’t strong enough. You cannot force HDR content to play in Web.
Your LG should support HDR so I will need more details on why that doesn’t work. In the Plex App enable the option to send logging data to your server. Playback the HDR movie, then after it fails, grab your server logs and post them here.
@Siniz When you play a movie on the LG, do not turn on subtitles. Enabling PGS/VOBSUB subtitles, or SRT subtitles if the audio is transcoding, results in a video transcode. If your server has transcoding disabled, then playback will fail.
Thank you @anon18523487 and @FordGuy61
I will try to run it without subtitles tomorrow to see if that helps. If it does not help, I will enable sending logging data.
Why cannot the error message the client displays be more clear here? It should guide the user on what the real error is. The current one gives no hint to the user.
What is the error you are seeing?
