How to FULLY disable Discover & Watchlist/Streaming Services

Every version of the server has a Build-In Web UI, that’s what he’s talking about.
That’s when you type 192.168.0.350:32400/web into the web browser
There’s also a version hosted remotely (Read not-on-your-personal-server) that you get to by typing app.plex.tv/desktop

Your local one is always an older version of the same webpage because the remote one doesn’t have to wait for a new server to update it & if there’s a problem they just fix it on their end & it works fine as opposed to having to push a server update if there is a problem to fix it.

My server update channel is Public, so why have I been forced to do your Beta testing?

This is the exact thing that people are concerned about. It hasn’t been released as a Beta, just with the label “Beta” slapped on it.

A PRE-release of software that is given out to a large GROUP of users to try under real conditions . Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as a result

By definition if it is given to everyone it’s not Beta…Some of us are happy to test things in Beta, But Plex has been out of Beta for like 6 years now, as a whole it’s not Beta for those who don’t do the Beta releases…

Add me to the list that want the option to turn this off.

I love the watchlist idea, but despite allowing me to add films from my server, I can’t play them from the watchlist so it’s a useless feature. I don’t need a stream search. I want to turn it all off.

Also, I hate that you can’t hit enter on the search and bring up all the results to go through like you used to be able to.

Lifetime user here, getting ready to switch.

Im tired of the extra stuff im not interested in and have no way to turn off.

Im running jellyfin and plex on same box, was easy to setup.

Jellyfin solves a lot of problems for me but also missing some stuff.

Hopefuly i will make a full transition into jellyfin in the near future.

Just curious if anyone ever figured out a way to get rid of this. I did NOT read through all the replies, so I apologize if I missed it. I purchased lifetime because I wanted an easy way for my kids to watch without getting links to other paid streaming services. It’s all good as long as we can turn it off. Tried to show PLEX to my folks and they also got confused by that. I understand as it may be a way to increase revenue, but at least for the people who paid for it, they should be able to turn it off right?

Sorry if I missing something!

We’ve been told by Plex that an account-level disable is coming… But it has been a long time since they said that & nothing really yet.
You CAN disable it on each client by going to the Search Settings when you do a search. In one of the client releases changelog I saw something along the lines of “Only show selected sources in More Ways To Watch” which should mean that if you choose nothing or just some obscure streaming source that doesn’t have anything you are looking for it should show nothing… But that is still coming for most devices I believe.

So this is easy. All Managed Users don’t see the Discover at all, their search results don’t show More Ways To Watch & Watchlist can only add things that are in your library. The Watchlist WILL still show the streaming services that it is available on, but only of the things that they can already watch on your server & your server will be listed 1st so though it’s not perfect by any means, it should be good for kids unless they have to click on everything in site, in which case they probably never are able to watch anything anyway.
The links to the streaming services only take them to the app if it’s installed already & they still have to be logged in, so if that’s a concern you should be comfortable that they can only get to streaming services they can get to by going out of Plex on that device anyway

EDIT:
In the it says:

Nothing on the Android or Android Beta still though

Summarising the current situation for users who just want to turn off Discover:

  • Currently can’t be fully disabled
  • Managed users won’t see it in sidebar or searches (only in Watchlist).
  • As main Plex user, to not have it in home screen, just unpin from sidebar.
  • As main Plex user, to disable it in searches, start a search and click the setting icon, unselect it from “Search in…” list.
  • It will appear in Watchlist for main user and managed users, there’s no way to disable, so for now don’t use Watchlist.
  • Proper settings management is apparently coming in a future update.

@matt99 you forgot to add

  • Do not use Watchlist with any user (managed or not) even if you have done all of the “hiding” listed above. It will still show More Ways to Watch on anything added to Watchlist (even if no providers are chosen).

Thanks. I didn’t know you could disable this garbage in the search results.

What a mess. Thanks, I’ve corrected my post, I don’t want to mislead people.

Managed Users don’t see the Discover at all, no need to unpin, so the only part of this that affects them is the crappy Watchlist.

Otherwise that was a great summary, worthy of being pinned, Thanks

Thanks, I’ve updated my post again.

Maybe someone from Plex will pin it…

I edited the op and added a link to your summary, thanks.

The new “disabled” setting re-added the “More Ways To Watch” options into search results. Clicking on entries just doesn’t show any services now - which is even more confusing.

I moved over to a managed account for other security-related concerns (ANY Plex User can search for ANY other Plex Account, they are all publicly searchable), see Thoughts on the forced Username implementation

This obviously had the added advantage of not having to deal with this other invasive change in Plex, but today that all changed… When I opened the client and entered my PIN for the managed account, I got asked what streaming services I like!

@BigWheel @elan When will the disable option be available? And by disable, I mean the ability to prevent my data being sold to a 3rd Party, an opt-out option, that all service providers need to have as per law in my country!

I think this is a bug. I’ve asked the team about it.

@drzoidberg33 Thank you

I didn’t find instructions on voting and feature request threads, so I’ll post what I did.

1 .Go to account settings->Online Media Sources
2. Disable everything.
3. Done.
