How to get rid of MP4 embedded metadata from my database?

Hi,

I have the following problem:

Recently, I encoded a TV show using Handbrake on Linux which somehow adds MP4 metadata like the DVD title into the file.

So, my file e.g. has the "title" "SHOWNAME_SEASON_3_DISC_1".

Now, I moved the completed files to my Plex folders.

Plex scanned the files and now these episodes show with these titles in all Plex frontends!!

How can I tell Plex to ignore such metadata tags?

I also have tried to remove the tags using MetaZ on my Mac (no effect has been visible in Plex) and by re-encoding these files where I tried to remove all tags in the Handbrake settings.

At last, I even tried to remove all information via removing all series information and "Correct wrong match".

But these wrong episode names just keep on reappearing!!

I don't want to edit all episodes by hand just to get rid of this bug (as I call it -- the series has its episode titles!).

So, how can I do this?

Furthermore, I would suggest to integrate a switch to select whether Plex should honor or ignore embedded metadata; selectable by series and by episode.

Moreover: Does anyone know how to tell Handbrake on Linux to NEVER include metadata tags? I did not find this switch... (Debian Wheezy stable, deb-multimedia.org)

Thanks a lot!

Kind regards

Anna Christina

PS. I am using Plex on Debian Wheezy (stable) from the repo shell.ninthgate.se

Version: 0.9.8.18.290-11b7fdd

Settings > Server > Agents > TV Shows > TheTVDB

Set "Local Media Assets Lower than "TheTVDB" in that list.

Then do a Force Refresh of the section. You might even have to move the files out, then do the refresh & then back in.

This will work, but it will have the unintended consequence of letting random artwork take precedence over local artwork if you have custom-downloaded posters etc

The alternative is to clear out those nonsensical embedded meta data.

You could use the file properties dialog of the Windows file explorer to ‘Remove Properties and Personal Information’
or
you use specialized software, like mp3tag for instance.
