How to handle massive media loss

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Unfortunately due to a busted pipe, I have lost 18 TB of media. The Plex Server database was not affected so my media in Plex shows unavailable.

I am looking for the best practice as to how to preserve the database of the failed media so that we can preserve the user specific watched status while taking into consideration the loss of media.

Can I just cut the data directory and reinstall Plex to form a new data directory? Then once I recover the media paste the old data directory back in place?

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

the only critical thing is the main db itself.
the preferences is also very useful, as it contains the plex server unique id (so you don’t have to re-invite/re-share the libraries to your users.

everything else can be re-generated/re-downloaded from plex metadata providers.

alternatively, you can just backup the plex data folder, but that will be a lot larger and take much longer.
