how to install PLEX on a NAS, the Zyxel NSA 325

so where or how exactly do i see the plex media server file system? Not a lot of info out there. I am trying to get the plex channels to show up so I cant install a few of them. There is talk to add a folder into the file system. I see my file system in my windows pms, but not sure how to see the file system when I installed it directly to the NAS and not on a usb stick.
Edit: so after about the 150th try literally, I clicked on add channels and low and behold there they were. Thus was after shutting down all media servers/ftp/iTunes server etc. Wonder if one of them was the culprit, or if I needed to click it 150 times???

I have a NAS325V2 on firmware 4.70, with 2 drives installed. I struggled to get FFP installed using the methods mentioned here. After a bit of searching I found this blog, and his method worked for me - http://yetiblog1337.wordpress.com/2013/12/08/installing-fonz-fun_plug-onto-the-nsa-325v2/comment-page-1/#comment-156

The only issue I have now is that all of my films are stored on an old Zyxel 210 NAS, and I can't find for the life of me how to add a different NAS as a source. All content hosted on the 325 shows fine.

hi proper newbie to NAS and plex. can i install and run plex with my Zxyel nsa221??

Hello, im looking to buy that exact model and run PMS on it, can you tell how is it performing with plex and in general, is it a good buy? Can it transcode? I don't know if the version 2 has arm or Intel chip.
Thanks in advance.

It has ARM cpu and transcoding doesn't work.

hi,

is there an idiots guide to doing this,

ive set plex up on my phone, tablet, pc & now tv, but to get them all to work i need to get it set up on my nsa325 v2 & all this seems beyond me.

ive read & read it but it aint going in.

thanks in advance.

Hi,

I also am a newbie in this :) Struggled all night to get PLEX installed on my first NAS ever.

Maybe some good hints for people who don't know anything about this ssh, putty, stuff (LIKE ME)

I followed the instructions from above (many THX for that) but bounced in some problems.  Probably stupid problems :)

When you open putty, (put in the IP, user & pass)  (when you type the pass, the cursor doesn't move:) then you will see: admin@name of your NAS:~$.

This is NOT the root, so the commands of alle the manuals won't work.  FIRST press the command "su".  He will ask your pass again, and then you are in the root :)

if u use 'uwsiteloader.sh' (see the manuals in above posts), you will get to a point where you will have to choose which version.  I chose the second from above (first didn't work).  The SYNOLOGY version worked out perfect for me.

Hopefully i have helped some 'dummies' like me with this additional info.

good luck

TRANSCODING

Good Day.

I've been running PMS on my ZyXEL NSA325 for many months now (thanks for the above directions for installing FFP first).

Here are my specs:

Running on a ZyXEL NSA325
   firmware: NSA325_4.70(AAAJ.0)  -- current

Welcome at FFP version 0.7/arm  (0.7zypkg004), running on NSA325 NSA325, firmware NSA325_4.70(AAAJ.0)
PMS 0.9.8.18

As you know, this version of the PMS does not transcode from one format into another on the fly.

For some reason I think something was automatically updated -- probably not the PMS, but I'm guessing it was the PLEX app on our Roku3 sometime in the last 2 months. Since then, my videos won't play. So, I'm looking for the best format to rip the DVDs to so that my PMS will stream them to my TV. (As an aside, on one tv we have Amazon FireTV with the Plex app and I can't get anything to stream on that, but I haven't devoted much time to debug that.)

I currently use Handbrake to convert VOB files. I do two different rips -- one "fullsize" to be played on our TV via Roku3 which typically yields about 1GB file, and another rip for our tablets (mostly our kids' Kindle Fires) with file sizes around 500MB.

Now, the TV won't play the full size but will stream the "portable" ones, but alas, the quality is not sufficient for the big screen.

I have recently changed my "portable" specs in Handbrake because I want to play some of the files on iDevices, and that requires a better (and higher file size) rip -- only saving about 25% in file size between the two -- the this new "web config" still isn't the best for the big TV screens, but work fine on iDevices and Kindle Fires.

I always did the smaller file size "portable" because of the space limits on tablets, but now I'm wondering if ripping each DVD twice is really worth it.

Any suggestions so that I can continue to use PMS on my NSA325? It doesn't look like PMS will be updated for the FFP PMS, so I need to find the best container and options to rip the DVDs. I'm ok re-ripping them all if it work well.

I'm also comfortable within linux so installing a different PMS (from the FFP package) is ok -- if I can get transcoding to happen on the fly -- if this ZyXEL NAS has the hardware to even do that well.

What are others using for NAS that will run the latest and greatest PMS?

Thanks all.

Here's my current Handbrake specs:
Fullsize that no longer works:
MKV H.264

Web/portable format that does work on the TV and iDevices:
MP4 H.264 WebOptimized

An update from me. I have successfully installed plex server on my nsa 325 V2 zyxel NSA . I am running firmware 4.70. I used the information from this forum to install it and have just successfully updated Plex through a script launced from the gui screen. I have been streaming 1080p and other videos successfully to my Samsung 55" plasma smart Tv downstairs as well as my LG 46" tv upstairs. I am very pleased with the results. Please feel free to post any questions

Have the NSA 325 V2 and just set it up with plex, i wonder what format you guys using? is there a format that can play on all devices without transcoding? IOS,Android,Web Player? I tried some mp4 x264 but i couldn get SRT subs to load in the webplayer, but seems to work fine on my android tablet. my ipad works but no subtitles either, same for Web player, do i really have to hardcode all subs?????

Please delete post

Hi All great thread I managed to get PMS up and running on my NAS325 v2 with out any issues just a pity I didn't read about the Trans coding issue before I purchased the plex pass..

Has anyone had any success streaming to chromecast?

Hey guys!
I just purchased an Zyxel NSA325 v2 in installed the ffp & PMS on it.

Now that i found out, that transcoding isn't available on ARM Architecture, i wanted to know how some of you managed to play their videos without transcoding.

So what i want is: Play Videos on my iPad mini & on my Laptop.

So i guess i have to convert the video into mp4 files with AAC Audio???

Or is this some kind of version issue..... i mean, for some of you it has worked already.

So please tell me what i can do to get things working :)

Thx!

And please apologize my english :-D

p.s.: i used the synology version. maybe i should try the netgear file for installation?

Followed these instructions and installed Plex on my NSA325 V2, so thanks for the clear instructions.

Was wondering though.....   does installing Plex on the 325 disable the sleep / auto power down of the NAS?  Mine seems to be permanently awake since installation?

.

i could do with some help with doing this please. I have a brand new zyxel NSA 325 v2 with the firmware 4.71

i have made the flash drive, rebooted, connected to it via telnet, activated ssh, connected via ssh

but the instructions im typing in arent working and i wonder where ive gone wrong. From my limited experience it seemes as though the files that should have downloaded havnt.

How do i go about downloading the plex file and installing it?

Have any of you ever received an error that says "you do not have permission to access this server" when you go to the YOUR IP:32400/Web ?

I am on an NSA 320 4.70 firmware.  I installed FPP via the repo method and updated plex with the latest Netgear .bin file .9.11.7.803.. via installing straight to the NAS drive (not the USB method)

My network setup:

192.168.1.100:32400/web/ (The NAS Plex portal)

Accessing from Computer on 192.168.2.100

I have a linux (Pfsense) router with 32400 port forwarded for both LAN and WAN.

I can SSH and FTP with no issues.

EDIT: I think it was firewall issues, I ended up just installing to WHS in order to get transcoding and no issues on the windows side.

Anyone tried the firmware 4.71 with PLEX? Zyxel rapidly ask me to update....

It works fine. I've been running mine for a while on 4.71. Just be sure to install the netgear package.

Here are new instructions and the interface does a lot of it for you now. http://forum.nas-central.org/viewtopic.php?f=249&t=7603
