how to install PLEX on a NAS, the Zyxel NSA 325

i have a Zyxel NSA325 nas drive.

I want to run Plex server on this. I am a bit of a newbie, can anyone help me with some instructions or links to useful reading that will get me started.

I found some install instructions for another dlna server

http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8933&sid=d9ffa4d7c714267ecc2214ec4b11b6c9

and i guess this will provide some useful starting points.

For a start what PLEX package do i download?

i assume it is from

http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/

but do i select Linux and which distro? or do i select one of the nas downloads, will it be arm or intel.

sorry for newbie questions

snozwoz......i just purchased a Zyxel NSA325 today.  How did you make out loading plex?  Curious to see how it works on this box - would def be interested in doing it if its not too difficult.

Have you had any luck with this?

FYI - If you load up Arch Linux ARM on your Zyxel NSA325 you should be able to run Plex Media Server using the instructions here - http://blog.qnology.com/2013/03/tutorial-pogoplug-e02-with-arch-linux.html

What you'll want to install is http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/FFP-stick, once you install the FFP stick you can download many more packages, including PLEXServer.

Once it is install you will need to run the shell script and start the server.

2. Activate plexmediaserver.sh for running-set the execute permission for script file:
chmod 755 /ffp/start/plexmediaserver.sh

3. Third step is about to install Plex Media Server to FFP stick. You can do it by running:
/ffp/start/plexmediaserver.sh install

4. Start PlexServer
/ffp/start/plexmediaserver.sh start

I, just recently tried this process and everything works on my NSA325

Ok I was not successful with installing to USB, I tried 3 different sticks and I am tech saavy.  Not Linux expert but this is basic process.

SO I moved on and installed it to the NSA325 itself, PLEX WORKS GREAT.

Of course I then learned that it does not support transcoding, but this is not a deal breaker for me...here is where it gets interesting.

I setup another Plex media server on Windows, as long as it is running I can access the media from my NSA325 and it will TRANSCODE!

WTH?

OK guys, I need a little help.  I was able to install PMS on my Zyxel NSA320 and it works great!   Great only with the official app.  I have two OSX computers running the Plex App and all my movies stream from the NAS without problems.  Here is my problem now.  I'd like to use my Apple TV 3 to view the stuff too.  I have been reading here for days, and was able to install the Plex connect server on my imac and I have successfully got it to work and see my files on my PMS on my NAS from the Trailer channel on my ATV3.  Unfortunately when I actually try to run the files I get an error that says unable to play file.  I also noticed that if I connect via Plex/Web I get the same kind of response.  All my library and files show up, yet when actually trying to play the files I just get a black screen that says  "loading"  forever.    Again if I run them from the Plex app, everything works fine.  Please help.  Thanks in advance.

I, too, would like to hear some thoughts on this :-)

I think duppa43 and nagazu's problems might be related to Plex consuming mass amounts of cpu when it's running.

Everything installed and runs fine on my NSA325 (faster cpu than the 320) and it pegs the CPU at 100% when ever anything is opened from Plex. I had two HD streams going at once, but it took forever to load the second stream. On the web it just takes a while to load everthing, longer than on my cable box through DLNA or through the app on my tablet.

Does anyone know of settings or other things I should try to reduce the CPU consumption and speed up plex?

-I am using the READYNAS install

- Streaming 2 HD streams through the built in DLNA server through the cable box and XBMC I only consume about 15% of my CPU vs 100% for 1 stream on Plex

Update: After letting is run for a few days and letting it optimize the DB it is running fine now. Pretty quick and only hard on the CPU when browsing libraries with 100's of items in them (but still not too bad). I've been able to run 3 HD streams at once with no problems.

Hello all. I just picked up the nsa320. I read that you can put plex media server on it and according to the above posts, you can. I am a newbie with this to be honest. If I install the plex media server on the nsa320, does it add it as a feature in the applications like iTunes server, etc, or does it replace it all? This is all new to me. I like the other features of the NAS and it would be so nice to point the android and ios apps to a media server instead to look for content. What exactly does installing the plex server leave me with? I am still researching but the rundown would be appreciated.

Okay. Read a bit more and now understand that this is more of a firmware that rubs temporarily off the USB stick. I seem to only have one USB stick and of course it is junk. Off to the store tomorrow to pick up another.

Adding Plex Media Server is just like adding another app to the NAS. Plex will just run along side everything else already running. You also don't need a USB stick, mine is install right on the drive.

First you will need to install FFP. These directions are easiest. If you are on the new 4.70 firmware then the web_prefix file needs  ftp://ftp.zyxel-tech.de/ instead of  ftp://ftp.zyxel-tech.de/2.new_mirror/

Next, you will want to follow the directions from here to install Plex. Be sure to use the ReadyNAS package (the Synology one failed for me).

redroger in post #5 also sums it up pretty well.

Good luck, it may sound intimidating, but it's pretty easy.

Thanks, and yes this is confusing for me at the moment. I am a hands on learner. I am assuming this will also work with the nsa320 right? Also, I am on 4.62. This is also my first NAS and I am still thumbing through and trying to get it all going. I really want to get the Plex going on it but I just might be trying to tackle more than I understand at this time without someone to walk me through step by step as I don’t know all the lingo, or even how to telnet yet. I might have to prod some friends who understand this all better I think. If anyone has the time to help it would be appreciated of course but not expected.

Edit: read and re-read and now understand how to install the ffp package. It is doing it now I guess from the packages list.
edit: got putty installed and started plugging in the scripts. I am at the installation part now.
Edit:I got to the Plex server setup screen like what I am used to seeing when I run it on my desktop. Still have yet to see if it all works but I am closer than before!

So I called it a night now knowing that I can install it. Only problem is that BT default it installs the synology. What is the command for us slow people to download the readynas package???
Edit: got frustrated. I learned that the netgear arm is the readynas that I want and right clicked and copies and inserted that link. Think i might have gotten it. Waiting the 30mins for it to do its thing. Cross my fingers.

Glad to hear you got it installed. Depending on the size of your media library be sure to give it lots of time to scan, update and download metadata. Due to the smaller processor it takes way longer than a PC does, but once it's done everything should run pretty well.

I am at work now, but I was having trouble adding folders in the PMS browser. I could navigate to the folder and click add, but it would just hang and not do anything at all. This morning I tried again to add my video folder and this time it worked, but it hung on the music folder. Must be processor related like you mentioned. I tried port forwarding but I am doing something wrong. I figured I would just put in 192.168.1.15 and forward port 32400 but it wouldn’t let me add it in the router. I did have the server ■■■■ down on my desktop and all but it wouldn’t work. Does it use a different port? I can see the server in my apps when on my local network. I know I am very close and I thank you for your words of encouragement, as I needed it.

Adding the folders was glichy for me as well. I just tried a few times and they would eventually add. I think my TV folder took 4 or 5 tries before it added.

Are you able to check your port forwarding settings for me just to see if I did anything wrong there.

Mine works with designating port 32400 in Plex settings then forwarding the port to my NAS's IP. I'm sure the port forwarding is different on each router.

Yeah. That is what I did for the PMS on the computer bit it would not allow me to do that on the router. I set it to automatically do it and it worked ultimately in the end. Still pretty bogged down getting the folders and metadata done. Is there a trick to getting the channels to appear so I can add the them? Researching that part now.
