I’m looking to move my Plex install from a Windows 7 machine, to a Synology NAS? Anyone have any experience with this?
I don’t believe there’s any way to move PMS’ database to a dissimilar platform and have it be usable. You can of course copy your media but otherwise it’s a new install.
Take a look at https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201370363-Move-an-Install-to-Another-System
The two articles at the top of this Support Page search are what you need to use

Its actually pretty simple.
I have gone from synology to windows (2 nucs and several pc’s) to drobo all directions several times - but not to or from shield.
Follow Chuck’s directions and if issues come back here
This link is dead? Looking to do the same. Any current info?
The first link is valid.
The search link is not.
Hi Chuck. Im having no luck moving my plex install from my mac os to my synology nas. Any help would be appreciated.
From your Mac to SYnology is very easy. You should see the common directory structure “~/Library/Application Suppor/application_name__here”
Prereq: Make sure the Mac is stopped.
- ZIP up the “Plex Media Server” directory.
- Using FAQ #1 (see my profile) give yourself access to the Plex Share
- Stop Plex
- Rename the existing “Plex Media Server” directory to “PMS.orig”
- Drop your Mac’s ZIP so it unzips and takes its place as “Plex Media Server”
- Right-click “Plex Media Server” and set the properties - owner as “plex:users” for “this folder, sub-folders, and files” (checkbox)
- Start PMS.
- Now transfer the media locations
- When happy, Delete the mac’s data.
Worked like a charm coming from WIn 10 to Synology, thanks for the steps, Chuck!
