How to play downloaded content?

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 1.5.0.951-eb39ca04

So this may be a dumb question, but I have installed the app and downloaded some episodes to watch because the Wifi here is terrible. How do I actually play the downloaded content? I tried just playing the episode as it shows up in the library but it still seems to be streaming from the server based on the amount of buffering that is happening.

PLEX plays the media from the directory you point it to when you create a library. If you want to play from your local hard drive, create the library there but if your plex server is on another computer, it will still eventually have to come from him. And if your connection to that computer is through your local wifi, well…

Check the main navigation on the left of your Plex app. There’s a section called “Downloads” which will contain/list all the downloaded items.

You can play your downloaded videos from there.

The thing I downloaded was a playlist. Looking at the playlist in the main library every item has the downloaded symbol. But when I go to the playlist in the downloads section it is totally empty.

Can you upgrade to v1.6 (just released)?

And then, navigate to the Downloads screen, select “All Downloads” from the first dropdown and “By Date Downloaded” from the second dropdown:

Then post a screenshot of that screen (with list of content).

Here is what I see after upgrading. Both the playlists have items in them on the server and shows as such when using the library to navigate in the app.

Clicking on them in the downloads shows this:

I am now running version 1.6.2.994-e05b79d6.

According to the related support article your server needs to be updated for this to work properly:

Requirements

  • Must be running Plex Media Server version 1.16.3 or newer

From https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-on-desktop/

he is running server 1.18.5. the 1.6 version he is referring to is the Plex for Mac player which is he is downloading to.

I’m guessing might have to do with them being smart playlist rather than a regular one and the items downloaded for some reason no longer fit the criteria of the smart playlist, but only a guess.

@EnglishMossop can you check if the files are actually in the download storage location https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-on-desktop/#toc-3

I’m afraid that I gave up and deleted the playlist downloads and tried downloading the episodes individually. That seems to work slightly better. They all show up in the downloads list and are generally playable, though sometimes it decides they aren’t and doesn’t show the picture or play button until I restart even though they are downloaded in the directory.

If this is all using similar sync code to that of the android app then it wouldn’t surprise me if this was an issue with smart playlists since the android app shows them as empty too when synced even though all the content is available. The episodes in question do still fit the criteria of the playlist.

it’s not
