How to power on rasplex with power supply

How do you guys power ON your rasplex while using a power supply?
Is it really the only way to unplug and replug the USB power cord?

CEC is correctly shutting down the TV after shutting down the RaspPi. And there is a Denon Home Cinema Receiver in between.
But to power ON the Pi I always need to remove the power first.

I would say that you want one of these:

Ned the Nerd pointed me in this direction a year or so ago and it certainly does the trick.

I made a script for safely powering on and off rasplex. You can check that

(sorry I’m on mobile right now so I can’t point you to the post, just check my user)

Thanks guys.
Both solutions sound nice.

Link to the GPIO power button thread in case anyone else is looking for it

On most cases you can just add the power button to most Rpi case

Hi,

I faced your same problem and went to an easier solution.

I got one of these (another option)with the tv on the master and the soundbar, rpi and some addons on the slaves. When the tv turns on, everything turns on within seconds, and when I turn off the rpi as part of its shutdown turns off the tv and then after a few seconds everything gets disconnected.

I think the time preshutdown is more than enough for the rpi as I have been using it for years now without problems.

Hope at least you have another option to take a look.

Interesting approach @wifi86, I never knew those existed

So your shutdown sequence in Rasplex turns off the TV though CEC? I Guess it should work but you need to remember that rasplex it´s always turned on so you need to shutdown your TV through it.

In theory you could also do that if you power your Pi through USB from the TV if you can get enough power from those. To be safe you could use one of these to get enough amps from thoses USB, plus you can build it youself or get them dirty cheap.

But you always need to remember powering off the TV though Rasplex, and thats if your TV CEC its compatible

That is the same as yanking the power cord. It may corrupt the filesystem on the SD card, so you need to reinstall.
This is exactly what the solutions above are trying to avoid.

Hi,

Not quite, let me explain. I only use the TV to watch things via RPi, so the workflow is always as follows:

  • Start TV
  • After a few seconds the cable connects the RPi, lightpack and soundbar.
  • Watch some tv shows
  • When decide to shut everything down, go to the RPi menu and shut it down, during the process the RPi tells the TV (via CEC as @videotecaCNSU already said) to turn off.
  • When the TV is off, the power adapter waits a few seconds and then disconnects the rest. And during those seconds, I can clearly see on the RPi that the only led on is the power one, so no writing or activity in the RPi.

Because of that, and because it’s been four years now in use without problems, I am pretty sure it is not the same as yanking the cord of the RPi, maybe to the rest of the electronics, but for them it doesn’t matter. Hope this clarifies a bit.

@videotecaCNSU As I already said, yes, CEC does the trick and there is no situation where I turn off the tv without doing it through the RPi. About the power cord to the TV, I though about it also, but then I got the lightpack with does not have an on/off switch and the soundbar so I decided to go with this as it just turns everything on when I am using the TV and everything is off afterwards.

If you do it yourself and only use that TV for PLEX I think that approach might be ok, but I dont think its a good recommendation for an average user. Forcing someone to turn the TV from one remote and shuting it down from another remote or a menu on another hdmi in is a recipe for a corrupted SD

I stand corrected.
But I have to agree with @videotecaCNSU that this probably only practicable as long as you are the only person operating this setup.

I am also looking for the same kind of solution, maybe you guys can help me out.

I have a Plex Server that goes to sleep and gets waked when I open any Plex app.
When my Rasplex Pi stays on, it keeps the Server awake so I use the auto-shutdown function.

The feature I want is to boot the Pi when I turn on the TV (if possible, only when I switch to HDMI port the Pi is connected to, but that’s the best-case scenario). Since I use the tv for more than plex, the solution from @wifi86 wouldn’t seem workable. Any thoughts on how to set this up?
