Plex server changes posters from time to time. This annoys the hell out of me. I have to change them back. And who makes new posters for some really old movies? That’s just weird.
Anyway, I added a movie, Plex automatically selected a poster for it, I like it. How do I keep it forever?
Download the poster and save it as a jpg file.
Put it beside the video file. Read the articles which have “local media assets” in their titles: https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/ for instructions how to place and name them.
Tell Plex to “use local assets” and maybe “prefer local metadata”
Companies which re-release movies.
Movie enthusiasts who like to be creative.
But often the change can be caused by someone uploading a new poster which is either rated higher by the community, or which is better fitting to your library language, over at TheMovieDB.org
FYI… TPDb https://theposterdb.com is an excellent resource for getting clean posters if you indeed go down the path of using local media assets (which I would HIGHLY recommend) for your artwork.
It’s not possible for me to manually save and manage posters. I have a moderate collection, and the whole idea of Plex is to manage it automatically.
To me, the correct movie poster is the one used when the movie was released. The one one sees on the wall when going to the movie or when it is first released to VHS/DVD/BR/streaming if it wasn’t at the movies. Opinions differ but I hate when something changes without any control. Something that shouldn’t change. And it wasn’t happening before. I don’t remember this happening a few years ago.
I add a movie, Plex pulls a poster. In 99.9% of cases I am OK with it. Is it possible to make it stick? I think Plex should have an option for this. If I go to edit poster selection and manually select the current poster will it stick? Will it stay the same? I may start doing this if it works.
I think if you disable “Refresh library metadata periodically” among the Scheduled Tasks, metadata will remain stable for years – unless you refresh them manually.
Thank you! This may be the solution. I went through those settings long time ago, before posters started to change. I didn’t look back. I unchecked it and will see what effect it will have.
Actually, the “Normal settings” have this not checked: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201553286-scheduled-tasks/
Hm, no. The description has this: Note: This metadata refreshing currently only occurs for music and TV libraries (assuming the library is on the latest metadata agent).
I am afraid it will do nothing for movies. Can all categories be added to this rule?
