How to rename headless Player?

Hello

i install Plexamp on Raspberry. Everything works, i can cast to “Plexamp” player from my Android app.

I would like to change the default name “Plexamp” to my room name, how is it possible?

Thanks

Check in Settings → Advanced → Player Name. You may need to restart your Pi for this change to take effect. And on your controlling devices, disconnect from the Pi and close the app; then reconnect. Or, you may just need to exercise more patience than I did :upside_down_face:.

The player name in settings are for local playback (brower, Android)

For the output playback RPi name, where is it?

I’m not certain what you mean by this. However, after changing the Player Name on my headless Pi Plexamp, the new name is the name which appears in my other Plexamp devices when selecting a player. As I mentioned, I needed to restart my Pi after making the change, and I also had to disconnect the other player from the Pi, close the app, and re-open/reconnect.

Note: My other clients are all iOS devices.

Thanks!
But how do you access to the RPi settings?

If i log to rpi-ip:32500, then i can modify only the browser player.

I’m not certain what the disconnect is here, but I provided the exact steps I took above. Here is what shows in my Pi’s Plexamp settings, as shown by accessing its IP address at port 32500:

After doing so, “Office Plexamp” is what appears as the player for the Pi in other Plexamp apps.

@fabien756 are you trying to change the word “Plexamp” that shows under the device name, like in the casting menu shown below?

The device name can be changed, but I think the text in the line below the device name is fixed, and refers to the specific protocol or app type being used

Yes, that is the case. The text below the player name is the application in this case. I’m aware of no way to change that.

No i do not want to change the name below which is static but the text above (first line) which sticks to “plexamp” .

It displays on Cast button:
Plexamp
Plexamp

I change name settings in the web ui of raspberry-ip, reboot RPi, but no change.
Strange

What client app are you using (Android, iOS, something else)? On my iOS devices I had to click the cast icon and disconnect from the Pi (connect to “This Device”) and then close Plexamp on the client. After re-opening Plexamp on the client, clicking the cast icon showed the updated name.

This may be client-specific. I only have iOS devices with which I can test at the moment.

changing the name of the web player doesn’t change the name of the Pi itself … there are various ways to do this … if you’re using Raspberry Pi OS, you can use raspi-config to change the hostname

[edit] - see post from @elan below, I wasn’t aware the hostname and player name for the Pi could be different

I am on Android app.
I did what you did, but the name did not change.
I check the rpi ui site, the setting with new name is OK.

i have already change the hostname thanks to install script for plexamp. No success.
I will follow your doc, thanks.

“plexamp” is the client type and cannot be changed.
You can only change the client name.

Using the browser, hit ip:32500 and edit the player name in advanced settings. It’ll modify the device’s name.

Thanks Elan, i did that but no change.
Maybe a cache to flush?

latest version picks up on the change immediately. however, i’d hold off on updating, we need to fix a silly issue.

Still having this issue in v4.4.0 where renaming in web does not change the name in the player selection. Still shows the device name.

make sure you’re shift refreshing to get the latest web bundle from the headless app, it’s possibly caching the last version.
