How to separate files that plex scanner believes are versions of the same item?

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1944
Player Version#: Plex 4.8.4

I have the Problem, that Plex matches different episodes together as “Episode 10” and the result ist like this:

The Source Files look like this:

(red files are matched together)

From my point of view I followed the naming convention, but maybe you can give me a hint, why it stumbles over some of these files. I deleted the library many times and the result is always like this.

Thanks!

Check the Plex naming convention for TV shows.

Far from it.

Regarding the use of square brackets: Plex ignores only the contents of the first pair of square brackets. But your folder name contains 7 pairs!

I agree, that the folder name has many brackets. However the folder is properly matched, it’s only some episodes that don’t match. Apparently especially even numbered episodes (2,6,8,10,12,14,16)

Why does for example

Baccano - 07 - Everything.Starts.Aboard.the.Advenna.Avis.[Enhanced].(BD.1080P.10Bit.X265.AAC.DUAL.AUDIO).mkv
match to Episode 7 correctly, but

Baccano - 08 - Isaac.and.Miria.Unintentionally.Spread.Happiness.Around.Them.[Enhanced].(BD.1080P.10Bit.X265.AAC.DUAL.AUDIO).mkv
match to episode 10? (Please see the second screenshot for more examples)

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe I followed the rule “ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info.ext”

I assume maybe the “10Bit” part triggers episode 10, but why on earth would it pick this part over the clear (?) episode label in the front and why only for some episodes? In my interpretation of the naming convention the last part should be considered “optional info”

Plex doesn’t match folders. It matches files. And your files are not named as required. Therefore you cannot expect Plex to recognise your files reliably.

Otto is suggesting that it would be more reliable if your names were like this instead (assuming these episodes are from season 1):

Baccano - s01e07 - Everything.Starts.Aboard.the.Advenna.Avis.[Enhanced].(BD.1080P.10Bit.X265.AAC.DUAL.AUDIO).mkv

and

Baccano - s01e08 - Isaac.and.Miria.Unintentionally.Spread.Happiness.Around.Them.[Enhanced].(BD.1080P.10Bit.X265.AAC.DUAL.AUDIO).mkv

though if I were ripping those I would personally leave out everything in square brackets / parenthesis perhaps with the exception of “Enhanced” (perhaps that is a different release of this? Not aware of this show) since the bitrate/formats are easily accessible in plex. That would result in something like this:

Baccano - s01e08 - Isaac and Miria Unintentionally Spread Happiness Around Them (Enhanced).mkv

I use a system that doesn’t mind the spaces, YMMV there.

He is not ripping  All the superfluous information is only there, because the person who packed this for file sharing included it.

@Timetraveler: your matches are “luck”. Get over it and rename all of the files (and folder) to the plex standard or you won’t be lucky in the future.

My attempt at being PC failed the sarcasm checker lol.

Agree, you’re going to need to just take the time to change folder and file names or learn and use an automated tool to have good results.

Your core question “Why aren’t these showing up properly” are due to incorrect file names, end of story.

Look on the bright side at least you’re not trying to work with kids shows or other multi-episode files that are always a terrific mess.

Indeed
This is a pretty simple case:

Baccano\Season 01\Baccano - S01E01 - Whatever crap you want to keep.mkv

All of it matters, folder and file names. And no you did not follow the guide.

^^ I like that better, but at the end of the day…

This is your Plex-Life with poor file names:

This is your Plex-Life with proper file names:

Any Questions?

This is FileBot:

Reading the naming guide, Optional_Info is ignored anyway. So I guess you can have whatever brackets you prefer, since even the episode title is neither read nor matched by Plex.

I’m a belt AND suspenders kind of guy - I even remove embedded Title Fields in MKV files because I just can’t help myself. It may be an illness, but My Plex-Life (apart from the cosmetic annoyances developers aren’t fixing) is definitely a Happy Kitty…lol

If I were to have a friend rip some content that chose to put things in metadata fields and bring it over to my server I’d do the same (remove it).

If it continued - I’d find a new friend…
(when I think about how many of those I’ve out-lived, I may reconsider - they seem to be in short supply)

FileBot can’t fix everything (but I’ve got something in the tool-box that will).

Thanks for the suggestions. As with many animes there are no seasons, but I guess I would be okay with calling it ‘first season’ and unwillingly add this unsightly ‘s01’ to the filename

I was mainly confused because some episodes work and some not, even tough they share the exact same pattern. I guess I just have to accept it, that this mystery can not be solved :man_shrugging:

“Some work” — Luck, basically.

As for one big season, the guide suggests for miniseries you put them all in Season01 so I’d say in this case it’s probably the best solution as well…

Actually there are:

  1. if you have FileBot - it goes to TVDB and gets the information so it can write a perfect file name/structure

or

  1. You go to TVDB to get the information so you can write a perfect file name/structure.

Please share the name of one (or two) of these ‘Season-Less’ Animes. Let’s see if FileBot can work it’s magic on it.

Thetvdb is probably your source of Metadata, so visit their site and see how they structure the episodes. This is what is important. And as already said, for mini series they are mostly put as a single Season 01. This is also the case for your anime.
