i have a denon stereo connected to wired speakers and volume controls through the house. I have Plex running on Synology and Roku devices all on the home network. Is there anyway to use a Plex iOS app to control music through the receiver?
You need a true Plex client that is connected to the amp. Then you can use Plex companion.

If your Roku still has analog audio jacks, you could connect it to the amp.
If you have a raspberry pi lying around, you could use this: Plexamp for Raspberry Pi Release Notes
Wow I didnât even know those functions existed. I am still a little unsure after reading the link. So if I connect a Roku Ultra via HDMI to my receiver, I could control the playback using my Plex iOS phone app, not the Roku app. I would start on my iOS phone and fling to the roku while the stereo receiver is set to the HDMI to which the roku is connected? Thanks in advance for your help.
Precisely. It might not work if you donât have a running Plex server in the local network though.
All 3 devices must be in the same network or it wonât work.
My Denon has AirPlay built in. I Airplay direct from the iOS ControlPanel.
Also: my AppleTV is hooked upto the Denon, I can AirPlay to it.
Also: might can find an AirportExpress in stock somewhere and add AirPlay.
Or the other suggestions above.
So as long as they are on the same wireless network that works or do they all need to be Ethernet cabled into the same router? I wasnât sure what you were implying by local.
If I may jump in and add?
I have Roku, AppleTV and a few others connected to my Onkyo.
On the ATV, i start the Plex app and select the ATV input on the Onkyo.
Now Iâm in control on iOS from my phone and the Plex iOS app.
some receivers have airplay and/or chromecast built in.
you can also use a chromecast/chromecast audio dongle.
plexamp doesnât currently support casting, but itâs been requested many times already, so maybe in the future it will be possible.
you CAN use airplay with plexamp, but you must connect the airplay at the system level.
from ios mobile > pull up the bottom control/shade > tap the circle/triangle in the player section (usually top right of control) > select the applicable airplay destination.
If your router doesnât isolate the âwirelessâ from the âwiredâ part of the network (most donât), they can be connected by a mix of wired and wireless.
Just wanted to say thanks. Plexamp is awesome and using your instructions Iâm able to use it over my older denon Receiver and play it across my whole home audio system. You guys are the best!!!
How do I connect Plexamp to Airplay on the âSystem Level?â I donât see this Airplay icon on mi iphone and I have an XR so what am I missing? I SO want to be able to use PLEX on my home stereo system
Works flawlessly. Thanks TeknoJunky!
Plexamp is really cool, casting is the only missing piece that I can think of. Maybe Sonos integration?
I think this $170 âBoss Playerâ from allo is a bit more of a hifi solution. Itâs a RaspberryPi, with quality DAC hat, in a case. You can put whatever OS you want on there, like RasPlex. I should really try this on my setup. If anyone is interested, let me know. Iâll give it a go and record how it goes.
Here is the guide to installing headless PlexAmp on a Raspberry pi: PlexAmp-installer for Raspberry Pi with armv7l HW
It incorporates the setup for the Hifiberry or a clone.
For the allo digione:
Add the config. to /boot/config.txt
dtoverlay=allo-digione
You may also want to comment out the dtparam=audio=on line in the config.txt to disable the âinternal soundcardâ of the Raspberry.
#dtparam=audio=on
Hope it helps!
I connected Roku 3 via HDMI to AVR Pioneer and used Pre-out RCA from AVR to the amplifier. Roku 3 runs Plex renderer and Plex server is on a Linux box on the network. But no sound. When I connect TV with Roku 3 I have sound from Plex. But not when connected to AVR. I set correct HDMI input on AVR and can see Plex on TV while playing, but no sound. Any idea what could be wrong in my setup?
